GLOBES & PROJECTIONS How does geography help us interpret the past, understand the present, and plan for the future?

Globes & Projections There are numerous types of maps and projections that geographers use to analyze information. All maps are projected the same way, but it is not possible to place information from a round globe on a flat surface. Each type of map projection has advantages and disadvantages.

Globes & Projections Thematic Map (digital text)  This thematic map can be used to understand differences between thematic maps and general-purpose maps.  Answer each question presented on the different maps.  Why do so many African countries have problems accessing safe drinking water?

Globes How are globes and map projections related?

Globes A globe is a scale model of Earth that accurately depicts area, distance, and direction Cartographers are mapmakers that convert 3-D globe images on flat maps

Globe Oldest known globe made out of an ostrich egg in 1504

Globe Oldest globe showing the “New World” – the Lenox globe

Projections There are 3 types of map projections: Planar, Cylindrical, and Conic

Globes & Projections Mercator Map video How did the Mercator map affect the way people thought about the world during earlier times? Common map projections slide (advantages and disadvantages) Why is a trip from Tokyo to Los Angeles a longer distance than it appears on the map?

Globes & Projections Why does a globe present the most accurate scale model of the Earth?

Latitude & Longitude Lines of latitude and longitude create a grid system on Earth’s surface that is used to determine location. The Equator divides the Earth in half, creating Northern and Southern Hemispheres The Prime Meridian splits the globe in to the Easter and Western Hemispheres The absolute location of a place is the point at which its latitude and longitude lines intersect. Lat./Long. Interactive map

Latitude & Longitude How does the definition of meridian help you understand what the Prime Meridian is?

How do maps work? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKbERlfgocM There are many components to a map, including a title, legend, symbols, and color-coding. Scale represents the consistent, proportional relationship between the measurements shown on a map and on the Earth’s surface. Physical, political, and thematic maps each serve a unique purpose and show different types of information. A mental map describes an individual’s perception of features on the Earth’s surface.

How do maps work?

Legends

How do maps work? Use the small-scale Maps and Large Scale Maps from digital text.

Homework Find the latitude and longitude of your home (absolute location). Write it down and bring it in tomorrow.

Geospatial Technologies Geospatial technologies include global positioning systems (GPS), geographic information systems (GIS), and remote sensing from satellites and aircraft. GPS uses networks of satellites and receivers to provide the absolute location of something on Earth. GIS are software programs used to process and organize data that links a location to its characteristics. Remote sensing is any technique used to measure, observe, or monitor something without touching it.
