2 TRADE MOST IMPORTANT! ► Important trade routes developed during the late Middle Ages that linked Africa, Asia, and Europe in new ways.  Silk Road connected Asia and Mediterranean nations  Maritime (water) routes via the Indian Ocean  Trans-Saharan routes across North Africa  North Europe linked by Black Sea  Western Europe seas and rivers  South China Sea connected Southeast Asia

3 What Goods were they Trading? ► Gold from West Africa ► Spices from India ► Textiles from India ► Paper and Porcelain from China and Persia ► **Amber from the Baltic region (Scandinavia)

5 Location, Location ► Japan is an archipelago:  Cluster of Islands (Japan has 4) ► Closeness to China and Korea makes trade and similar cultures easier!

6 Influence of Chinese Culture ► Writing ► Architecture ► Buddhism  About 91 million people in Japan still practice Buddhism!

7 Shintoism ► State religion of Japan which focuses on worshipping the emperor and ancestors  Animistic: Everything in nature has a spirit ► Majority of people who follow also practice Buddhism
