1 Project Infrastructure for steps I-III Tim Hayler, STFC – RAL MICE Collaboration Meeting, RAL, nd October 2008

2 Contents: Our starting point What we need to do Dates & Milestones The inevitable pitfalls

3 Our starting point Assumptions are that: –The shield walls are built –The LH2 & RF galleries are built –The DSA is operating seamlessly as part of the ISIS syncrotron –The false floor is laid –The Hall PPS and ‘domestic’ electrical installations are complete and working –Local Authority planning is granted for Phase One and all relevant safety stuff is signed-off –Air conditioning is fully working – vital for operation of Linde plant and decay solenoid This should take us until about mid-January 2009 –Then we’ve got a ‘blank canvas’ to start on

What we need to do Step I –Much of it is in place –Sliding beamstopper will be installed in October shutdown –It’s all made and has been dry-assembled –Fixed beamstop is installed –TOF1 is awaited – details this week hopefully –TOF1 cabling necessary 4

What do we have to do? Step II –Installation of cooler compressors –Installation of power distribution boards –Location of vacuum infrastructure –Installation vacuum and pipework –Installation of diffuser –Diffuser/rolling platform air supply and control rack –Integration of tracker & spectrometer solenoid & patch panel –Install rolling platform #1 –Install TOF1 & reposition KL & route cables –Install TOF2 & cable –Install TOF1 shield –Design & make solenoid lifting/handling gear –And a lot of other things! 5

What do we have to do? Step II status –Compressor layout and dist board agreed by TB in September – thanks to Ian Mullacrane –Means design has started –Rolling platform #1 delivery Dec 08 (OK just) –Air compressor & supply pipework being bought/designed (Willie will do installation) –TOF1 shield is here (rather at Milton) –Tracker is ready –Layout of vacuum infrastructure agreed at CM21 –Needs converting to design design drawings before we can make/buy anything –Solenoid lifting gear being designed. 6

What do we have to do? Step III –Partly dismantle step I –Install rolling platform #7 –Connect pipework for air supply –Integrate tracker #2 & solenoid –Mount complete assembly on rolling platform #7 –Make all connections –Mount solid spool-piece –Insert LiH absorber Status: –Rolling platform #7 due in December –Solid spool-piece is made and on its way – RAL will do leak-test –LiH absorber safety case for RAL in progress – or rather on the list! As much of the work is duplicated, hope we learn from step II 7

Dates & Milestones Presently rather sketchy, hope that the reviews this week will fill in the gaps – infrastructure is largely driven by when the ‘big’ bits arrive Step I TOF1 arrives – mid November? (wild guess) Beam stopper operational by 30 th October Step II TOF 2 arrives February ‘09 Solenoid arrives early-mid Jan ‘09 Rolling platform installation and air supply ready mid-Jan Compressor support installation & dist board end Jan’09 Diffuser ready 20 th November TOF1 shield ready now Step III Tracker #2 ready ??? Solenoid #2 arrives mid-March ‘09 LiH absorber ??? Spool-piece – finished 8

The inevitable pitfalls We are sure to have pipes & cables penetrating the shield walls, as the shield wall had to proceed before the Hall layout was fixed Willie has demonstrated that single plates can be removed at random quickly for holes to be drilled - good We should collect the services and integration as a discrete WP with one full-time engineer But it’s doubtful the UK funding will stretch that far The really difficult bit is going to be steps IV – VI! The MICE project really needs some space independent of R5.2 for pre-integration. We mustn’t delude ourselves that the Hall is large enough 9
