1 MICE Beamline Installation, status & plans Contents: Upstream & Target, BPM Decay solenoid DSA, D2, Q4,5,6 cKOV support Q7,8,9 Open issues & concerns Weekly MICO meeting, 7 th February 2008 Andy Nichols, RAL

2 Upstream, target, BPM Online target has been installed, tested to 500 continuous actuations, currently raised out of ISIS beam awaiting off-line target to start, due at RAL today – meeting on Friday with ISIS to discuss operating conditions – see talk by Chris B Q1,2,3, D1 all connected to water & power & interlocks Actual BPMs are not installed, untested scintillating tile devices were installed, but cannot discriminate between ISIS background and MICE beam Some stainless steel filler plates required for aperture in synchrotron – four weeks to manufacture, install next short shutdown

3 Decay Solenoid Progress now dependent on problems with Linde plant  Defective compressor rotors gone back to Linde, due in two weeks  Re-commissioning will resume then Work continues on piping & cabling form gas panel to solenoid – no real problems, but access to DSA will be needed to erect scaffolding – it is a worry that none of this work is defined properly on drawings Then we have to reconnect transfer line to solenoid, again access to DSA essential – short shutdown in March?

4 DSA, D2, Q4,5,6,cKOV stand D2 is connected to power & temporary water Q4,5,6 are connected to power and polarity check OK Water is not connected before DSA access barred – flanges not ready. But now we have the flanges but no ‘O’ rings! For the future, need to cover requirements like this on assembly drawings – that way at least we have a list of parts The cKOV stand arrived in time, but was 150mm too low despite being reviewed. New packing pieces now made – simple installation job, but…… Need access to DSA of course…  Need to follow up with ISIS – there might be a case to go in, as the radiation survey showed no difference from previous ones. Need to understand risks with non-solid shielding around solenoid

5 Q7, 8, 9 Q7 – essentially complete, needs klixons fitted, then water/power test in R6 Q8 – known as the oddball – being stripped down, new tubing required, then test as above Q9 – only manifolding refurbishment outstanding (but mostly done) Girder boxes, etc – Q8 support needs new holes tapped, stiffening plates making (Steve York at DL), Mirror plates are horizontally joined, new holes need drilling One month’s work remaining, so:  Magnets mounted by 8 th March Water & power connections will be done then, by then we had better make sure that we have all the bits

6 Open issues & concerns We have been held up by relatively mundane, but vital things, such as the water flanges Each MICE subsystem must have reasonably representative installation drawings and specification that capture all details of pipe/cable runs, flanges, fittings, seals and fasteners If nothing else, this is a requirement of the CDM regulations We have to plan for this in phase two
