All about Drawing! Year 8, Term 2, Weeks 7-13

Lines Line Lines There are many different types of line: straight, curvy, zig zag, dashed, jagged, rough, sharp, soft…. Artists use different types of lines to create different effects and feelings in their drawings and paintings.

Task one Divide up your page into sections You should make each section a different size and shape – make 10 different shapes in total In each shape write a different emotion. In each shape, think of a different way of making a line to express that emotion. Fill up your shape with that line – remember you are doing your first drawing in your new unit, so take your time and make an imaginative composition.

Homework ESCAPE VELOCITY by Elsa Schieder, My nerves shriek I need to reach ESCAPE VELOCITY My nerves strain I must attain ESCAPE FEROCITY Sometimes I snarl Easy to quarrel Hard to attain my goal, my aim ESCAPE VELOCITY fueled by ESCAPE FEROCITY I am not meek I am not mild I seethe I boil Like an A-bomb I go wild Can't keep the force INSIDE I feel the strain The shell won't hold.. Print out the poem, cut around it, and stick it in the middle of a new sketchbook page. Using only lines, illustrate the poem, filling up the whole page. Do not draw pictures, just patterns/lines/shapes.

Contour drawings Contour drawings are made up of one continuous line that doesn’t stop – when you try to do a contour drawing, your pencil shouldn’t leave the paper! Where have you heard the word Contour before?

Task two After watching Mr Hebden, we will fill up two pages in our sketchbooks with contour drawings! On one page we will draw 4 small objects – spend 5 minutes on each drawing (total 20 minutes) On page two we will choose 2 bigger objects – spend 1- minutes on each one (total 20 minutes)

Homework What is a contour drawing? Where is the best place to hold the pencil? What is the most important thing to remember? Draw 3 contour drawings of your hand. Remember – take your time, keep looking at what you are drawing, and include as much detail as you can see!

Blind Contour drawing This is a technique that helps us get better at drawing – why do you think not being able to see what we are drawing, could make us better?

Task three We will try some quick blind drawings to warm up, and then try a longer drawing to test our skills….

You must do a blind contour drawing of your friend – sit opposite them but not too far away You should spend 15 minutes on your drawing. Don’t cheat!

Assessment Piece 1 Contour collage/painting Using our new skills we will draw a still life Look around the room – what would make a good area to draw? You need to be responsible for making an interesting composition. Don’t draw your objects too small – fill up your paper! You must have some lines going off the edge of your page When you have made some light lines to guide you – start your drawing …remember its one continuous line! After you have finished your outline you can add patterns and details You must then use one colour to paint or collage some colour areas of your drawings – like in these examples. This piece of work will take 3 periods

Levels – print out this page, complete it and stick it in your sketchbooks To calculate your overall level, please find the average number and letter grade from the 3 sections Level I have used one continuous line all the time. My drawings show I have observed carefully AI can use my line and I can control it, showing accuracy and detail. My drawings show a good level of observation AI have shown a lot of detail, I have tried to draw surface patterns and textures. I feel like I look more carefully. AI have filled my paper with a challenging composition. My work shows a high level of complexity and detail. A BBBB CCCC I can explain why how artists have made lines, and why they have made them AI can talk about my work and the work of my friends using unit keywords AI can explain the meaning behind my work and other people work AI can explain how and why I have made work and how other people have done so. I use ideas that I talk about to improve my work. A BBBB CCCC I can change and improve my work and keep my sketchbook organised and neat AI can analyze and comment on the images in my sketchbook AMy sketchbook is colourful and well organised, and I use it to experiment with my own ideas as well. AMy sketchbook contains my own ideas and experiments and I use these to improve my project. A BBBB CCCC What went well so far… What will I try and improve during the rest of the unit….. I have calculated that my work so far in this unit is level _______.

Gestural Drawing Look at the lines in these drawings – how would you describe them? How do you think the artist made them? Can you imagine the movements he or she made? What does the word Gesture mean?

Task 4 We are going to draw….Fast! Gestural drawings are great for capturing moving things, because you move your hand and arm very quickly, but its also good for making your drawings feel like you could touch them. Gestural drawing is about capturing the form of something. We will start by doing one page of drawings of small objects. 3x5 second drawings, 3x10 second drawings, 3x20 second drawings, 3 x 30 second drawings and 3 x 1 minute drawings

Task 5 Using colour! Pick two complimentary colours (check your colour wheel) Starting with the lighter colour, draw in the basic lines Use your second, darker colour, to add more detail Use your pencil to finish the drawing 2 x 10 minute drawings

Homework What parts of the arm do you use when you are doing a gestural drawing? How is this different to a contour drawing? Why might you use gestural drawing to draw something?

Task 6 Figure drawing… You are going to draw everyone in the class! Before you start make sure you understand the human figure proportion rules that Mr Hebden has explained on the board – getting this right is important…no giant alien heads please! Spend 3 minutes on each friend, and then switch Fill up two pages in your sketchbooks doing this.. Try mixing up your viewpoints and compositions

You are going to be doing a self portrait using the same kinds of painted marks. This will take 3 periods. Assessment Piece 2 Alberto Giacometti was an artist who used a lot of gestural marks in his drawings.

Homework – Print 3 Giacometti drawings, either from this PPT or from the internet. Next to each drawing, discuss his style, and how he draws. Write your personal opinion on the work you have chosen – go into detail using unit keywords. Write down 3 facts about his life.

Levels – print out this page, complete it and stick it in your sketchbooks To calculate your overall level, please find the average number and letter grade from the 3 sections Level I have used gestural lines to build up my drawing and include details, and some light and dark areas. AI have used gestural lines to show a good level of detail, light and dark areas, and surface textures. I can successfully build up a drawing in stages AI use a variety of different lines and movements to add form. I can show a clear understanding of composition AI can use gestural lines to create a challenging portrait that shows depth, form and feeling, as well as a high level of accuracy A BBBB CCCC I can explain why how artists have made lines, and why they have made them AI can talk about my work and the work of my friends using unit keywords AI can explain the meaning behind my work and other people work AI can explain how and why I have made work and how other people have done so.
