2 GCSE Art Exam 2017 Diary Week 1: Title page/Question/mind map & Pinterest images. Week 2 & 3 : (AO1) Artists research and analysis. Week 4: (AO1 & 3) My Initial Ideas; take photos, find source material and objects for observational studies. Week 5 & 6: (AO3) Recording ideas; producing a series of drawings from your photos and objects. Week 7 & 8: (AO2 & AO3) Developing previous work using Artists techniques and your ideas. Experiment with different ideas, materials and techniques, then select your best ideas. Week 9: (AO2) My Final idea & planning 24th March: Exam session 1. (2 hours) Week 10 & 11: (AO2) Evaluate first session, finalise planning for final sessions. 26/27th April: Exam session 2 & 3. (8 hours)

week 1: starting point context (A01) presenting your title page Create a Title Page: Read the exam questions. Choose one question. Create and print a PINTEREST board of inspirational images based upon your question for your title page or section. Link your background and title style to the theme of the question. The title page or section should include the question. Remember good presentation is vital. From here on in each page or sheet should be a piece of work in itself. How do you want to present your question? Think about your strengths. Are they painting, drawing, collage etc. What ideas can you find on the internet, in art books, in magazines.

Creating a Mind Map To be successful: I will design my mind map in the theme of the question. I will lay out my ideas roughly first. I will include descriptive words, keywords and phrases relating to the question. I will include and link images, illustrations in my presentation. Note: If you are not good with presentation you can do it on a computer.

Week 1: Developing & Exploring your ideas (A01) researching artwork & ideas to create a Pinterest board To be successful: You will create a Pinterest Mood Board of ideas, images and artists work to inspire you. You can find lots of images on the internet by looking at the artists written in the question. Follow our St Josephs Pinterest account. You need lots of ideas and plenty of images to inspire you. For example: If the question was FOOD find images of things that show artists who have worked with food, fruit or sweets etc. When you find different artists record their name and label their work Include any linking keywords. Print out your pinterest board to collage into your sketchbook or studyboard. Remember to think about presentation. Food Mood Board

Artist Research To be successful: You will create a Mood Board of ideas, image and artists work to inspire you. You will research your chosen Artist You will present pages on your artist, images of their work and write about their work and background in your own words. You will explain how the artists link to the question/theme, and what elements of their work appeal to you. You will include images and draw examples of their work. You will use the mood, content, form analysis guide sheet that your teacher will provide. You must express your own opinion about their work. (Make sure all these steps are covered in your Artists work) STEP 1: History: Research the artist’s background information. STEP 2: Description: Describe this piece in as much detail as you can. Leave nothing out. Step 3: Analysis: Describe the work. Step 4: Interpretation: Explain your view about the piece of work. Step 5: Judgement: Explain your point of view about the piece of work; the strengths and weaknesses. Who is the artist? What do you see? List everything you can see in the piece of work. Describe the visual elements the artist has used in their work: Line, tone, colour, shape etc? Write at least one clear sentence describing what the artwork is about? List 3-10 things you like about the work. Explain why using your first impressions. What type of art work does the artist make? Describe the materials and techniques the artist uses. How has it been composed? Describe the feel, mood or message in the work?  Explain why you chose this artists work. What art movement is the artist associated with?  Can you add anything else? What is the style of the work?  Can you add anything else? How does their work link to your exam? Can you link this work to other artists you have studied. Write your notes into an short essay using no less than 80 words Remember to present the work of the artist you are describing. To increase your marks copy a section of their work in your sketchbook as part of your presentation.

10 week 4: my initial ideas (A03)
for example write: To be successful: You will write about your initial ideas and research for your exam. Even though you may change your ideas later. At this stage you don’t need to be very specific. Keep it general. My Initial Ideas. I want to discover more about the subject of FOOD. The theme I have chosen is sweets but I do like other aspects of food too like junk food vs healthy food. My influencing artists are Sarah Graham, Wayne Thiebaud as well as a few others. I chosen this topic because I like the colours, shapes and detail of sweets. I want to record directly using photography and drawing from a range of sweets. I want to explore different angles and arrangements to produce interesting compositions as a starting point. From here I would like to experiment with a range of materials and techniques to see what effects I can achieve.

13 week 4: my initial ideas. Homework (A03)
To be successful: Take a series of photographs of your chosen subject matter. Remember to think about the quality of the photographs (clear and well composed) The photos HAVE to be printed off. Have the photos ready to draw from in class. Bring in any objects relating to your theme that you can draw from.

14 week 5 & 6: recording from direct observation (A02 &A03)
To be successful: You will create 1st hand observations from your photographs. You will do several pages or sections of observations that link to your theme and annotate your work. Your observations should be a mix of photographs and drawings. Your recorded observations can be linked to the artists style and techniques you are studying as part of your experiments. To be successful: I will select a few of the best ideas I have produced so far. I will explain what I aiming to do for my final piece. I will try different techniques before making my final choice. I will evaluate my strengths, weaknesses and next steps when experimenting. You can photograph your progress as well. You will start your final piece out of your sketchbook for 2 hours under exam conditions. Ensure you have planned carefully for the 10 hours. Have you got all your materials ready for the day? Remember to ask us – Make a list of your needs. Is it achievable in 10 hours? Have you practised using your materials and techniques? Do you know what size you are working at? Photograph your work

22 week 10 : Evaluating my first Session
WWW? EBI? Do you need to further refine your idea? If you have changed you mind after doing your experiments and your first two hours, you need to include a page explaining why and how, showing your new idea with any new photographs you intend to work from.

23 Week 10 &11: finalise planning for my exam (A03 & A04)
To be successful: My book or studyboard will contain the final prep for the exam. I will explain exactly what I plan to do for the rest of my exam in detail. I will show how this links back to the artists work I researched. I will attempt some small sections of my final piece to make sure it works by testing materials, include examples, planning the scale of your work , explaining and evaluating my progress. For my final piece I intend to….. This will show the exam theme ‘…………….’ by……. Be specific and describe as well as illustrate exactly what you need to do. This is your chance to think through what you want to do without pressure!
