Connector: How do these masks relate to the theme celebrations?
Where do you think they might be from and why? What differences can you see? When do you think they might be used? How do these masks relate to the theme celebrations?

Big picture: Learning outcomes Demonstration – Complete drawing stage
Drawing the masks basic shapes Discuss what different levels Complete drawing stage Review progress so far Set ‘partner’ target on folders

Learning outcomes: All will complete the first stage of a mixed media mask painting by drawing the basic shape and facial features, patterns and details Most will fill the page and accurately draw and place facial features, shapes and patterns Some will select areas to add pencil crayon and begin to neatly apply colour, smoothly blend colours and show different tones.

Key words Mixed media: Using more than one ‘art tool’ to create an piece of work Observation (art terms) When you look really hard at an image or object to notice all the details

4a Drawing fills the page Drawing is very accurate and very neat compared to the image All facial features are the correct size and in the correct place Shapes and patterns are the correct size shape and in the correct place Drawing is symmetrical (if necessary) 4b Drawing mostly fills the page Drawing is mostly neat and accurate with only a few small mistakes which can be changed easily Most facial features are the correct size and are in the correct place 4c Drawing mostly fills the page and is neat Drawing is good but has a few obvious mistakes which will need to be corrected Most facial features are the correct size and shape but they may be in slightly the wrong place (e.g. eyes may be too high) 3a Drawing could be larger on page Drawing is neat but some obvious mistakes need to be corrected Facial features are mostly the correct shape but the size and place may need to be changed to be more accurate

½ way review: Spend 1 minute walking around the room. Find some one’s work you think is developing well and stand behind it. Explain what they have done well and one thing they could improve.

Review: Part 1 Answer the questions below give a maximum of 2 marks for each. Give 2 if they have done it really well, 1 if its ok,0 if they have not done it at all. Does the drawing fill the page? Is the drawing neat without untidy marks from pressing down to hard on the pencil? Are the facial features the correct size and shape? Are the facial features in the correct place? Have they added accurate patterns and details? Have they begun to add smoothly blended colour showing many levels of tone Maximum of 12/12

Review: Part 1-targets Give your partner a target from the below list. Think about where they lost marks in your opinion 1) Make sure drawing fills the page. 2) Don’t press down too hard on the pencil- it leaves dark untidy marks. 3) Make sure all drawing is the correct size and shape. 4) Make sure all shapes are in the correct place in the drawing. 5) Make sure all details, patterns and textures are accurate. 6) Add smoothly blended colour showing at least 3 changes in tone.

Final personal review The level I think I am currently working at is……..this is because……… Points linking to levels… 12= 5C =3A 11= 4A =3B 9-10= 4B =3C 7-8= 4C

LEVEL 3a – 3c Drawing needs to be in the centre of the page and made larger Drawing is satisfactory but needs better observation of shapes, placement of facial features and patterns. Colour has been applied neatly but does not show colour mixing, blending and use of tone. Oil colours have smudged on the page and presentation of work is poor LEVEL 4a – 4c Space on the page is used well and drawing is large Drawings are well observed and shapes and patterns are symmetrical (if necessary) Facial features correctly placed. Page is kept free of smudges when using oil pastel and colours are blended neatly Some areas of light, middle and dark tone is shown. Paint is applied neatly but colours need to be more accurate compared to the original LEVEL 5a- 5c Excellent and imaginative planned use of space. The Image the pupil has selected to work from is more complicated but their drawing is still accurate. Shapes and patterns are accurate, symmetrical (if necessary) and facial features correctly placed. Pupil has mixed primary colours together to make secondary colours not just used colour straight from the pastel. Colours are neatly blended to show a smooth change in colour Different levels of light middle and dark tone are applied to the drawing Colours are accurate compared to the image they are working from Page is kept free of smudges 5c Drawing fills the page Drawing is completely accurate and very neat with no mistakes compared to the image All facial features are the correct size and in the correct place Shapes and patterns have been added and are accurate in size shape and in the correct place Drawing is symmetrical (if necessary) Colour has begun to be added showing very accurate tone and smooth blending.
