Upcoming Events 2/14/14-Valentine’s Day Party 2/19/14- Field Trip to Mayan Exhibit 2/21/14 – Ms. Brown at GT Conference Spelling Four Day Weekend Take a break! Dear Families, We have a long weekend this week. After deliberating with myself and consulting with a parent, I have decided to send NO HOMEWORK! I am sure many of you have plans to enjoy the EPIC snow in the mountains and less is sometimes more when it comes to homework. I did a check in on the Star Reading Assessment for my class. The class as a whole has grown 1.5 years in reading – this is the average of all students. We are focusing on character, setting, reading skills such as visualization, questioning, predicting and inference as well as increasing vocabulary. Every child is reading on or above grade level! Yay! As I mentioned last week, we will make lunches to donate to a homeless shelter. Kat found a church right down the street. We will walk at 10:30 tomorrow morning and drop the lunches off at a nearby church. REMINDER: Please be sure your child remembers their Valentine Box and Valentines tomorrow. February 19 th - Field Trip to Museum of Nature and Science - We are set to go to the Maya Exhibit at The Denver Museum of Nature and Science. I can take one more volunteer for free. If you can come please me. We will leave the school on the bus at 9:15 a.m. We will return on the bus at 1:30 and be back at school at about 1:45 p.m. We are planning to go to the planetarium as well as the Mayan Exhibit. Please send in a $7 cash or check made out to Kathleen Zimmerman. Kat paid out of pocket to cover the trip. My understanding is the cost is $5 Mayan Exhibit, $5 Planetarium, and $2 Bus. So $5 was covered by the funds collected for Cleo Parker, leaving $7 per person as the final amount. Please also send in a fully disposable lunch for your child it is easier not to have to bring water bottles and lunch boxes back to school. You may or may not be aware that we have been having trouble at recess with football. Some students have felt excluded and it is becoming a disruption to class. Yesterday the football players in our class suggested taking a break from playing football for a couple of weeks. I think this is a good idea for our class. So there will be no football until February 24. Hopefully the break will be beneficial. If you have time on the weekend, please have your child work on the Sound Unit Project. Please allow your child to be creative in developing a musical instrument. Kat and I are attending The Beyond Giftedness Conference next Friday. So there will be a substitute. Our school is collecting for pennies for patients, if you’d like to donate. The money raised will help fight leukemia and lymphoma. Thank you to all the parents that have been helping out in class lately. I really appreciate it, and I know your children love having you here! Have a relaxing weekend! Ms. Brown
