What is a Clause? : a group of words that can function or not function by itself. 2 Types of Basic Clauses 1) Dependent (AKA-subordinate) 2) Independent (AKA- main)

Dependent Clause (also called subordinate clause): Fragment- it does not express a complete thought. It can NOT stand alone as a sentence. Always begins with a subordinate conjunction (refer to your list) If a dependent clause begins a sentence, then place a (, ) after it Dependent clauses can be located anywhere in a sentence If you have a transition word first and then a dependent clause, place a comma to separate. Ex: However, unless we leave now, we will be late for the movie. Ex: 1. When the bell rang the students had to remain seated. 2. The concert was canceled after the tornado alarms sounded. 3. Students that the teacher asked to sit get to leave on time.

Independent Clause (also called main clause) : Sentence- expresses a complete thought. It CAN stand alone as a sentence. Independent clauses can be located anywhere in a sentence Ex: 1. The teacher gave extra time on the assignment so that her students could finish. 2. Before lunch ends, my friends are going to the library.

Write each sentence and underline the dependent clause and circle the subordinate conjunction. Punctuate accordingly. 1)Because Liz was out past curfew she was grounded for two weeks. 2)However while Maggie read her book Brandon slept in class. Write each sentence and underline the independent clause. Punctuate accordingly. 3)Braden and his friend skipped RAO and they landed in IP for a month. 4)If Emily is willing to give up social time on Thursday she can repair her grade in class.
