3. WHAT ARE ADVERBS?
ADVERBS are words that modify, or describe, verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They generally answer the questions when, where, why, how, or to what extent.
I will leave for my vacation tomorrow. (When will I leave?)
I looked around for my missing keys. (Where did I look?)
The sprinter ran gracefully past her opponents. (How did she run?)
I studied thoroughly for my math test. (To what extent did I study?)

4. WHAT ARE CLAUSES?
A CLAUSE is a group of words containing its own subject and verb. Clauses can be independent, meaning they stand on their own as sentences, or dependent, meaning they cannot stand alone, and must be attached to something independent. INDEPENDENT CLAUSE: Because it rained all day, the game was canceled. DEPENDENT CLAUSE: Because it rained all day, the game was canceled.

5. WHAT MAKES A CLAUSE DEPENDENT?
Most dependent clauses are dependent because they begin with a word that makes them dependent. This word is called a SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTION. Common subordinating conjunctions: after, although, as, because, before, even though, if, since, so that, though, unless, until, when, where, and while. Because it rained all day, the game was canceled.

6. WHAT ARE ADVERB CLAUSES?
Like adverbs, adverb clauses answer when, where, why, how, and to what extent. NOTE: The conjunctions starting each clause are underlined: After we finished dinner, we gathered to watch TV. (When?) I found my notebook where I had left it that morning. (Where?) I was late for school because my mom’s car ran out of gas. (Why?) Although my test wasn’t until Friday, I began studying a week before. (To what extent?)
