Do Now: Read the sentences below and decide whether the underlined clauses are independent clauses or subordinate clauses. Write an “I” for independent or an “S” for subordinate. **Helpful Hint: Independent clauses can stand alone** Before we go on vacation, we must make reservations. I was not at home when she came to see me. Whether you like it or not, you have to do your project. The fireworks show will start after the sun goes down. After I have finished my work, I will go with you to the mall. He wants to study in France so that he can perfect his French.

2 Examples of Subordinate Conjunctions:
Adverb Clauses: Include both a noun and a verb but cannot stand alone as their own sentence. They tell how, when, where, why & to what extent. Adverb clauses must always begin with a  subordinating conjunction. Examples of Subordinate Conjunctions: After Although As long as As soon as Because Since Than Though Unless Until When Wherever Where Whether While Before Even though If Rather than Once

5 Adverb Clause Rules Adverb clauses can be moved and sometimes removed.
Only use a comma if the adverb clause begins the sentence. Examples: Sandra felt better after eating a snack. After eating a snack, Sandra felt better. Before going to bed, I did my homework. I did my homework before going to bed.

6 Directions for Today’s Classwork:
Write down the 8 sentences from the worksheet onto a separate sheet of paper. Underline the adverb clause. Circle the subordinating conjunction. Then build two original sentences that include an independent clause and a subordinate clause. You must again underline the adverb clause and circle the subordinating conjunction.
