What is a dependent and independent clause?

2. Definitions Clause: a group of words that has a subject and a verb.
It can sometimes function by itself as a sentence, or be only part of a sentence.

3. Definitions Dependent Clause (subordinate):
has a subject and a verb but does not express a complete thought. It can NOT stand alone as a sentence.
Ex: When the bell rang, the students had to remain seated.
Students that remain seated get to leave on time.

4. Definitions Independent Clause (main):
has a subject and a verb and expresses and complete thought. It CAN stand alone as a sentence.
Ex: When the bell rang, the students had to remain seated.
Students that remain seated get to leave on time.
