IECECC Writing What does the acronym IECECC mean? – Introduce – Evidence #1 – Commentary/Analysis – Evidence #2 – Commentary/Analysis – Conclude Each body paragraph should be in this format!

IECECC Writing Introduce – give context on the issue/topic. “Set the stage” for your paragraph. Assume the reader doesn’t know anything about your topic/issue/part of history. These introductory sentences provide a focus to your paper. Introduce your mini-thesis for this paragraph (what will you be discussing and proving with evidence?). This should be about 2-3 sentences long. Evidence (1) – may be given I the form of a direct quote, or paraphrased. Must be cited correctly using internal (in-text) citations. For example: – “If men were angels, no government would be necessary” (Document A). – James Madison believed that if people were perfect, or “angels,” that the rules provided by government would be unnecessary (Document A). OR According to Document A, James Madison believed….

IECECC Writing Commentary/Analysis – discuss the significance of the evidence. Why is this important? When providing your analysis do not say things like “This quote is important because…” Use analytical techniques to present your ideas clearly and how they relate to the point you are trying to make.

IECECC Writing Evidence #2 – another quote or paraphrase of the text cited correctly that proves the same reason to support your claim. Commentary/Analysis – gives support to why evidence #2 is significant/important to your claim. Conclude – wrap up your paragraph’s strongest points. This sentence should focus on the ideas presented but stated in a new way, and acts as a transition to your next body paragraph, or conclusion paragraph.

Page 112 “More Perfect Union” Mini Essay Write two paragraphs explaining how and why the Constitution created “a more perfect Union.” – Use the following terms correct within your mini- essay: popular sovereignty, checks and balances, federalism (underline these terms in your essay) – Use the IECECC format – Comment on and analyze the evidence. Why/how does that part of the Constitution show a more perfect Union? Discuss how and why the evidence is significant and important to Americans today. – Use proper spelling, grammar, and sentence structure.

Instructions Claim: The Constitution of the United States helped to create “a more perfect union” by ____________reason #) and ___________reason #2. Brainstorm with your table groups some ideas for how the Constitution created “a more perfect Union.” You need two main ideas that will each become a body paragraph! Identify evidence within the text to support the claim. Why/how does that part of the Constitution show a more perfect Union? Determine how you might use the required terms in your mini-essay (Popular Sovereignty, Federalism, and Checks and Balances). Discuss how and why the Constitution is relevant today as related to the reasons you identified. This must be integrated into your paragraph. When identifying evidence from the text, write down the page number from the book. If you use direct quotes, write the textual evidence (quote) word for word. Your citations should include the title of the book and page # For example, (History Alive 5). Write your 1 st paragraph as a group – everyone in your group MUST use this paragraph. Show me your paragraph when done. Copy and paste your group paragraph into your personal GoogleDoc. Write your second paragraph on your own in your personal GoogleDoc. Follow the directions provided in your GoogleDoc (SS Ch 9 Mini Essay)
