Things of which to be aware: You MUST have a turnitin.com receipt for your research paper (stapled to the back)…it is open now. You must turn in your stamp/ process sheet on Tuesday with the essay…it is worth 3 daily grades If you have not turned in a signature sheet you MUST do so by Monday (3/5) if you want me to grade your research paper.
3
Before we start… Take out your typed essay You need to get out a pen/pencil You need 2 different colors of either pens, makers, highlighters, or pencils. You need maturity ( I know for some of you this might be the most difficult ) This is worth two major grades and you need to take this seriously.
4
MLA Format Paper has a proper MLA Heading –Your Name –Ms. Clendenin –English I-period – Day Month 2012 The draft MUST BE typed (double spaced, Times New Roman/ Arial, 12pt)
5
MLA Format Paper has a creative title (or any title) –If not write in that you need one! All margins are set at 1 inch
6
Introduction First sentence: Attention Getter Background information on your topic –(4-6 sentences) Thesis Statement--Underline –States your subject –List 2 things you are going to prove
7
Step 1 Look at the introduction Underline the attention getter. Really read and make sure you are not underlining the background information. In the margin, write what method you used as an attention getter: quote, statistic, question…
8
Step 2 Identify your background information Is it 4-6 sentences long? Did you explain enough about your topic/ person/ event that the reader won’t be confused in the essay?
9
Step 3 THESIS STATEMENT Take one highlighter and highlight your thesis This is the part of your thesis that lets the reader know what your essay is focusing on. Take your pen/pencil and circle the 2 points in your thesis. This is to make sure you have the 2 points that you are going to prove in your essay. Make sure the thesis is the LAST sentence in your intro.
10
2 Body Paragraphs Clear Topic Sentence 2 Quotes to Prove Your Topic Sentence 2 Sentences of Commentary per quote Concluding Sentence
11
Step 4 Number your Body Paragraphs 1 & 2 Take a highlighter and highlight the topic sentence in each body paragraph. Write the topic out in the margin next to the sentence. Make sure the topics match your reasons in your thesis. Put a yes in the margin if the topic sentences are clear and easy to understand. Put “not clear” if they are not.
12
Step 5 Take a pen and underline each quote in each body paragraph. Highlight your words (which should be, at the least, before the quote begins) This is to make sure that all of your quotes start with your own words. If the quotes do not start with your words this MUST be fixed by Thurs. Make note of it in the margin.
13
Quote Citation Take a highlighter and highlight the in text citations. Remember in text citations are the information in the ( ). ( ). Sources with one author –(Smith 73) or (Smith) Source with no known author –(“Animal Experimentation” 2) or (“Animal Experimentation”) (“Animal Experimentation”) Source with more than one author –(Smith and Jones 73) or (Smith and Jones)
14
Concluding Sentence After the last piece of commentary Highlight the concluding sentence Make a note in the margin if the concluding sentence does not address the topic of the paragraph. Underline the transition to the next paragraph. Do you have an idea of what the next paragraph is going to be about? IF not, make a note in the margin.
15
Conclusion Restate Thesis Statement –Underline the restated thesis –Highlight the 2 points Provide Sense of Closure –Does you ending relate back to your attention getter?
