Chapter 4 The Great Gatsby

The place to be “…who accepted Gatsby’s hospitality and paid him the subtle tribute of knowing nothing whatever about him” (61). Gatsby had a very eclectic group of people attend his parties. Klipspringer-”the boarder” who seemed to move into Gatsby’s house What was the purpose of all of this?

A day with Gatsby One morning in July, Gatsby insists that Nick have lunch with him. Everyone knows Gatsby’s car. It’s a cream, almost yellow color, huge, lots of compartments, very expensive. Nick admits he is not as impressed with Gatsby as he thought he would be. Gatsby begins telling Nick an elaborate story and desperately wants to be believed.

Gatsby’s Claims Son of wealthy people from the Midwest (San Francisco) Educated at Oxford Did a great deal of traveling after his family died Fought in the army in the war…claims to have been a hero Awarded a medal from Montenegro Gatsby shows Nick his medal and a picture from Oxford What does all of this show?

An interesting day Gatsby has a request of Nick, but he’s going to let Jordan tell him. This annoys Nick…that isn’t why he asked Jordan out. They get pulled over and let go because Gatsby supposedly did a favor for the police commissioner. Who is this guy? Nick meets Gatsby at lunch and is introduced to Mr. Wolfsheim. Wolfsheim starts talking about a friend of his that was shot at the restaurant across the street.

The mystery gets deeper Wolfsheim thinks Nick is looking for some type of business deal, but Gatsby quickly cuts him off. “…[Jordan’d] never do anything that wasn’t all right” (71). Why is he lying to Nick? Once again, Gatsby disappears to take a mysterious phone call. Wolfsheim admits to having known Gatsby for several years.

More questions Wolfsheim claims his cufflinks are made of human molars. Wolfsheim is a gambler and supposedly fixed the 1919 World Series. They run into Tom. When Nick tried to introduce them, Gatsby mysteriously disappears. Why?

The story Daisy and Gatsby met in 1917 in Louisville. Jordan was a friend of Daisy’s. She supposedly got caught trying to sneak to New York to say good bye to a soldier. She didn’t talk to soldiers after that. Several months later, Daisy was going to marry Tom Buchanan of Chicago. Tom gave Daisy a wedding present of pearls that were worth $

The story The night before the wedding, Jordan finds Daisy drunk. She has thrown the pearls in the garbage. She was clutching a letter and saying she had changed her mind. However, she married Tom the next day without a fuss. Daisy seems to love Tom. However, he got caught with a hotel maid in Santa Barbara.

The story Daisy has her little girl and they spend the next several years traveling. She runs with a wild crowd, but maintains a good reputation and doesn’t drink much. When Nick came to dinner is when Daisy realized it was the same Gatsby she used to know. Gatsby bought that house on purpose to be close to Daisy. The green light it at the end of her dock.

The favor Gatsby wants Nick to invite Daisy over. He wants to stop by like he didn’t know she would be there and show her his house and his wealth. He threw all the parties hoping she would show up one night. Gatsby has kept up with the papers so he could see Daisy in them. Gatsby doesn’t want Daisy to know he is there before she comes to tea.

Jordan and Nick “There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy, and the tired” (79). Nick is starting to fall for Jordan and finishes the chapter making out with her.
