My Management Philosophies By Brendon Mayberry “Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.” - Peter Drucker

MANAGEMENT THERORIES I HAVE LEARNED Great Man Theory Trait Theory Group/Exchange Theory Situational Theory “A key to achieving success is to assemble a strong and stable management team.” - Vivek Wahwa

GREAT MAN THEORY People assume management roles because of outstanding previous actions. What this theory is Leaders are respected and known because of previous works. They are allowed to take leadership roles because of the trust from followers. What are the Benefits I have not had the opportunity to apply this management theory because of my lack of skill and experience. How it applies

TRAIT THEORY Specific traits are needed from the manager to accomplish a given task What this theory is Different people with given talents can practice leadership when they have the correct traits. Allows for a variety of leaders inside of a unit. What are the benefits During the SEPPP project I stepped up as a leader because of my experience in event planning process. I choose sub- leaders based of their skills and experiences. How it applies

GROUP/EXCHANGE THEORY One leader is elected for the greater benefit of the group What the theory is Each member of the team understand and acknowledges the needs of the group and who can satisfy them. Each member agrees on and respects who the leader is. What are the benefits This management theory often gets used in class group projects. It is the best interest of the students to assignment one manager to understands the assignment. How it applies

SITUATIONAL THEORY Managers are selected because of the task at hand and not because they attribute to one specific theory. What this theory is Managers can adapt their skills to the given situation and tasks that need to be accomplished. What the benefits are I use this in work on a daily basis depending on who I am working with and what it takes to motivate that person to a task. How it applies

GENERAL MANAGEMENT THEORIES Transformative Theory Collaborative Leadership Theory Servant Leadership Approach “Effective leadership is putting for things first. Effective management is discipline, carrying it out.” - Stephen Covey

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED FROM THESE THEORIES All Management philosophies are based on the needs of the employees Simple management theories are easier for employees to understand Employees must understand what your management theory is and why it applies to them “Management is all about managing in the short term, while developing the plans for the long term.” -Jack Welch

FOCUS ON THE NEEDS Manager VisionGoalsMotivationDesires Managers must satisfy employee needs When a manager focuses on the needs of their employees they know how to create vision, create goals, motivate and satisfy desires. A manager who knows the needs of their employees can help them to be more productive and efficient.

SIMPLE MANAGEMENT THEORIES ARE BEST Future Vision Long Term Goals Short Term Goals Daily Activities “Reduce the layers of management. They out distance between the top of an organization and the customers.” –Donald Rumsfeld By simplifying the management theories employees can better understand and achieve the goals of managers. This allows for simpler and clear communications between coworkers.

EMPLOYEES NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE THEORY Employees understand your theory Employees respect the theory Employees give the manager what they need By clearing communicating with your employees how you will manage them they can recognize and respond. This allows for a healthy cycle of respect between the manager and employee. This is recognized by “Servant Leadership Approach” and “First, get rid of the managers”. “Corporate culture matters. How management chooses to treat its people impacts everything “ - Simon Sinek

LEADERSHIP VS MANAGEMENT Leadership is motivating employees Management is planning tasks for employees to accomplish as part of a bigger goal. The biggest difference is the “why” behind motivation for employees. They are the same because both motivate employees to accomplish daily tasks to fulfill long and short term goals. “Leadership is working with goals and vision; management is working with objectives.” – Russel Honore Employees Leadership Management Two different ways, The same goal of motivation

MY THEORY What it is When it is applicable Where I have used it What management theories I got it from “Practice the Golden Rule of Management… Manage other the way you would like to be managed.” – Brian Tracy

WHAT THE THEORY IS Example Management Theory The manager sets an example for employees to follow Earns the respect of each employee Motivates employees by showing how hard the manager works Intrinsic push for employees to be the best Rewarded based off work ethic and achievements

WHEN IT IS APPLICABLE This management theory is applicable in situations where the manager is working directing with employees to accomplish a task. The manager can set an example of work ethic to intrinsically motivates the employees to work harder. Managers can use this theory most effectively in small groups where they are respected and work one on one with employees. MANAGER Employee

WHERE I HAVE USED IT My current job at Superior Ski utilizes this management theory Hierarchy of Superior Ski Experienced Boot Fitter Experienced Ski Tuner Entry Level Employee Assistant Manager Owner Manager Each employee reports to each other in order to efficiently get tasks done

WHERE THE MANAGEMENT THEORY CAME FROM Situational Theory All employees share in management tasks with the manager and a specific employee can step up when needed. Collaborative Leadership Theory Managers rely on group problem solving and shared decision making from each employee. Servant Leadership Approach Because managers are creating an empathetic environment where the success of the employees is the success of the manager. Managers serve and care about the success of their employees.

KATZ MODEL The Katz Model shows top level employees are more focused on conceptual skills while lower level employees are more focused on technical skills. Both top and lower level employees have a focus on human skills

KATZ MODEL FOR MY THEORY Each employee is equally focused on Human, technical then conceptual in that order. Customers and team work are the most import in this management theory ConceptualTechnical Human Manager Starting Employee

THANKS FOR LEARNING! and remember… “Our chief want is someone who will inspire us to be what we know we could be” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
