Presentation transcript:

John Calvin Protestant from France Fled to Switzerland for safety. Wrote Institutes of the Christian Religion. Similar to Luther… Faith alone for salvation Different from Luther… “Predestination”: God pre-determines who will go to Heaven and who will not.

John Calvin Calvinism became very active in trying to spread the faith. 1536, Geneva: Created a Consistory (a group in the gov that punished people for violating religious morals). Crimes = dancing, obscene songs, drunkenness, swearing, playing cards.

Reformation in England Not so much about religion, but about politics. King Henry VIII wanted to divorce his wife, Catherine of Aragon. Had 1 daughter, but no son. Wanted to marry Anne Boleyn. The Pope was unwilling to annul the marriage.

Reformation in England King Henry VIII used the English court system to end his marriage and eventually broke away from the Catholic Church and made the Church of England (“Anglican Church”). King became head of the church.

Side Note About England… King Henry VIII’s daughter, Mary (daughter from Catherine of Aragon), would later become Queen of England. Because of her deep Spanish Catholic roots, she will try to revert England back to Catholicism. Burned Protestants at the stake and received the nick name “Bloody Mary.”

Anabaptists People who followed Martin Luther allowed the gov to play a role in church affairs. People like the Anabaptists disagreed. Believed in complete separation of church and state.

Anabaptists Beliefs… “Adult baptism,” meaning infants and children are not baptized because they have not personally made the choice to follow God. All people are made equal. Elected their own ministers Did not bear arms or go to war because of full belief in “thou shalt not kill.” Anabaptists were considered radicals and would be persecuted by both Catholics and Protestants.

Women During the Reformation The shift from Catholicism eliminated the connection between holiness and celibacy. The family became the center of human life. Promoted love between husband and wife. Women were given religious reasoning for their roles. Stay at home and care for it. Obedience to husband Bearing children Proverbs 31: 10-30

Proverbs 31: 10-30 10 A wife of noble character who can find?     She is worth far more than rubies. 11 Her husband has full confidence in her     and lacks nothing of value. 12 She brings him good, not harm,     all the days of her life. 13 She selects wool and flax     and works with eager hands. 14 She is like the merchant ships,     bringing her food from afar. 15 She gets up while it is still night;     she provides food for her family     and portions for her female servants. 16 She considers a field and buys it;     out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. 17 She sets about her work vigorously;     her arms are strong for her tasks. 18 She sees that her trading is profitable,     and her lamp does not go out at night. 19 In her hand she holds the distaff     and grasps the spindle with her fingers. 20 She opens her arms to the poor     and extends her hands to the needy. 21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;     for all of them are clothed in scarlet. 22 She makes coverings for her bed;     she is clothed in fine linen and purple. 23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,     where he takes his seat among the elders of the land. 24 She makes linen garments and sells them,     and supplies the merchants with sashes. 25 She is clothed with strength and dignity;     she can laugh at the days to come. 26 She speaks with wisdom,     and faithful instruction is on her tongue. 27 She watches over the affairs of her household     and does not eat the bread of idleness. 28 Her children arise and call her blessed;     her husband also, and he praises her: 29 “Many women do noble things,     but you surpass them all.” 30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;     but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

Women During the Reformation View of Virgin Mary as a normal women who was an obedient servant of God; NOT divine entity to be prayed to. According to Luther and Calvin, women are a part of God’s plan.

Catholic Reformation The strength of the Protestant Reformation made the Catholic Church consider serious changes. Because of the Council of Trent the Catholic Church now had a clear doctrine of religion. Revived confidence and trust in Pope leadership. 1545: Council of Trent Group of Catholic leaders who met off-and-on to decide changes. Affirmed traditional Catholic beliefs Faith, good works, tithing 7 sacraments, Communion, Celibacy of clergy Belief in Purgatory (lost between Heaven & Hell) Selling indulgences forbidden!
