Medieval Era Secular Music

Medieval Era: Secular Music Secular music developed in the late Medieval era People were focusing more on Common Law, and not on the Church Secular : means being separate from religion

Medieval Era: Secular Music Secular music in the Middle Ages included: Love songs Political satire humor that shows the weaknesses or bad qualities of a person, government, society, etc. Dances Dramatic works

Medieval Era: Secular Music Instruments used in secular music: Drums Harps Recorders Bagpipes They were easy for the traveling musician to carry Instruments were taught through oral tradition and provided great dancing music and accompanied the stanzas well.

Medieval Era: Secular Music The largest collection of secular music from this period comes from poems of celebration and chivalry of the troubadours from the south of France. These poems contain clever rhyme-schemes, varied use of refrain-lines or words, and different metric patterns.

Medieval Music: Troubadours The word troubadour is a French word meaning “to find,” “to invent.” Invented new poems, finding new verse for his elaborate love lyrics. Traveling musicians. Some travelled to the major cities of Europe. The troubadour would play for royalty, lords and nobles. Medieval Troubadours travelled to the Holy Land accompanying the people who went on Crusade. Traveling allowed Troubadours to spread the latest news.
