2.  Mood, or atmosphere, (already in notes) is the emotion created in the reader by a literary work.  Rhyme scheme is the pattern of end rhymes, or rhymes at the ends of lines of verse.  A ballad is a simple narrative poem in four-line stanza, usually meant to be sung and rhyming.

3.  Folk ballads were composed orally and passed down by word of mouth to generation to generation.  Traveling musicians would sing ballads telling about tragic newsworthy events.

4.  Arthurian Romance- stories of the exploits of the legendary King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table.  Chivalry-code of conduct of the medieval knight.  From The Pearl Poet

5.  Courtly love-code of romantic live celebrated in French and English medieval romances.  Folk tale-A brief story passed down by word of mouth.  Motif- any element that recurs in one or more works of literature or art. Ex. Someone of low estate turning out to be a king or supernatural being.

6.  Frame tale- a story that provides a vehicle for the telling of other stories.  Characterization- the use of literary techniques to create a character.  Think about how the Pardoner is described in “The Prologue.”

7.  Irony- the difference between appearance and reality.  Dramatic irony  Verbal irony  Irony of situation

8.  Morality play A type of medieval drama in which the characters are abstract caricatures of virtues, vices, and the like.  Allegory  A work in which each element symbolizes, or represents, something else.  What is a naïve allegory?
