Representative Governments Government system where the people are represented by elected officials who make decisions on their behalf Makes sense—people are busy! This way, people can still have a voice without spending all their time on politics.

Representative Governments (1)Republic / Representative Democracy – Head- President/Prime Minister – Representatives are elected by majority vote – Representatives are expected to reflect voter’s wants and needs Example countries: United States, South Korea, Germany, Canada, etc. (lots of places)

Representative Governments (2) Constitutional Monarchy – King or Queen is head of state, but NOT head of the government (just a fancy person ) – Head of government is usually a prime minister/president – King or Queen’s power is limited; a legislature voted for by people makes laws Ex: Great Britain (UK), Sweden, Norway Sweden United Kingdom

Authoritarian Governments (2) Dictatorship – Rule by ONE – Dictator has absolute power; people have little rights – Usually backed by the military, usually took over by force – Dictator often tries to act like a god

Authoritarian Governments (3) Communism – The government plans and controls the economy, owns all property, and controls all aspects of government – A single party holds the power – Strives to make everyone equal by force Communism usually ends up being a dictatorship, with one leader or one family of leaders for a long time Example countries: Cuba, North Korea, Vietnam

North Korea is a very controlled “communist” dictatorship.

Authoritarian Governments (4) Theocracy – Rule by a few – Based on religion – Rulers are spiritual leaders – Laws are religious in nature (“fear of god”) Ex: Iran – they have an “elected” president, but they also have a religious supreme leader, an Ayatollah.

Authoritarian Governments (5) Oligarchy – State ruled by a small group of citizens who make decisions for everyone else – Ruled is based on wealth/class or military power No current examples, but some people say that many countries are becoming oligarchies because of the huge gap between the rich and poor.
