Death triggers Alliances With Ferdinand's death the Austro-Hungarians blame the Serbs and ask Germany to assist The Serbs expected Russia to assist them – If Russia in was France to assist Russia July 28 – Austria Hungry declared war on Serbia – Russia mobilizes and declares war – Germany declares war on Russia and France – France declares war – WWI begins

Germany’s Plan Send massive force to knock France out of war – Then take Russia Germany crossed into Belgium bringing Britain into the war Germany swept through Belgium and into France beating the French and British.

Taking Sides 8 million Germans and 4.5 million Irish sided with Germany Most agreed with our relations with Britain and France Preparedness movement vs Peace Party Britain worked to gain American support using Propaganda

Moving to War Britain declared blockade on German ports required ships to stop in Europe to search for contraband Germany responded by sending U-boats – Will sink any ship near Britain without warning May 7, 1915 Germans sink Lusitania – Kills 1200 plus 128 Americans Made Sussex Pledge Helps to re-election as “Peace” president

Final Straw January 1917 German telegram to Mexico offering lost territory in Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico for help in war with America – Zimmerman Telegram Feb. 1, 1917 resumed unrestricted sub warfare
