3 Europe Goes to War Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a Bosnian Terrorist on June 28, 1914. As a result, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Russia (allies of Serbia) declares war on Austria-Hungary Germany (allies of Austria-Hungary) declares war on Russia and France UK (allies of France) declares war on Germany.

4 Causes of the War (MANIA)
Militarism – glorification of military power and values Alliances – when countries have secret alliances to help or aid each other in time of war. Central Powers: Germany, Austro-Hungary Empire, Ottoman Empire Allied Powers: UK, France, Russia (eventually the US) Nationalism – A strong feeling of pride and loyalty to one’s nation Imperialism – when one nation takes over another nation Assassination – Franz Ferdinand

5 What is the US doing? Wilson has the US stay neutral. They stay out of the war and foreign affairs. The US ends up trading with both sides of the war.

6 Rising Tensions Germany builds U-Boats (submarines) to get around the British blockade Germany conducts Unrestricted Submarine Warfare U-Boats sink many British Ships, including the Lusitania (1915), which had Americans on board.

7 Propaganda Propaganda is created to get support for each side, encourage enlisting in military, and conserving resources needed for the war.

8 US Declares War Germany sends Zimmerman Telegram to Mexico, which promised to help Mexico regain lost territory. Telegram was intercepted and on April 4, 1917 the U.S. declares war on Germany
