Science Notebook Setup

WHY do we have to have a science notebook? To use the writing process for discovery and synthesis of inquiry. To model many enduring functions of scientists – recording information, data, and experimental diagrams To improve your ability to organize ideas and information To provide a study reference for each unit, as well as a resource to consult for review before tests

WHY do we have to have a science notebook? To demonstrate to yourself, your parents, and your teacher your developing organizational skills, understanding of science concepts, and ability to express thoughts and feelings in a variety of ways.

Step 1 With a marker, write the following on the cover of your composition notebook: – First and last name – Chemistry – Period Mrs. Canevit Chemistry Period 1

Step 2 Cut out the science notebook grade sheets and staple them onto the inside front cover of your notebook. Place semester 1 over semester 2 and staple here

Step 3 Starting with the first page, number the first 20 pages front and back. Left hand pages should be numbered in the upper left corner and right hand pages should be numbered in the upper right corner. Page 1

Step 4 Title pages 1 – 5 “Table of Contents” Divide each page into two columns. Title the first column “Assignment” Title the second column “page number(s)” 2 Table of Contents 3 Table of Contents Assignment Page #

Step 5 Cut out the interactive notebook explanations for what goes on the left and right side pages and tape or glue them onto pages six and seven of your notebook. Left Page = OUTPUT Right Page = INPUT The left page demonstrates YOUR understanding of the information from the right side page. You process new ideas by reorganizing the info in creative, unique, and individual ways. The left side helps focus your attention and guides your learning of the new science content, concepts and ideas. What could go on the left side? Concept maps Venn diagrams Pictures Drawings Writing prompts Diagrams Flow charts Illustrations Summary of articles Tables / Graphs Word Webs Mind Maps Brain Storming Self Reflections Cause/Effect Top 10 List Acrostic Review Your Questions CD Label One word / One Image Summaries Poems, Songs, Cartoons, Quotes V3: Visual, Verbal, Vocabulary Class work or teamwork activities Foldables BE CREATIVE Science interactive notebooks are used to help you learn and remember important scientific concepts. Why do they work? This notebook style uses both the right and left brain hemispheres to help you sort, categorize, remember, and creatively interact with the new knowledge you are gaining. What goes on the RIGHT side? The right page is for writing down information you are given in class (INPUT) Lectures Readings Presentations Labs Videos 67

Step 6 Fill in your table of contents Update your table of contents ANY time you add something new to your notebook 1 Table of Contents Assignment Page # Table of Contents 1-5 Notebook How-To 6-7

Step 7 Bring your notebook to class EVERY day. Take your notebook home with you EVERY night. Leave your notebook at school EVERY FRIDAY to be graded.

Nature of Science Worksheet 1.Fold The Nature of Science worksheet in half. 2.Glue, tape, or staple your Nature of Science worksheet onto page 9 of your science notebook. 3.You should ONLY be gluing, taping, or stapling the edge since this is a double sided worksheet.
