Arms race between Germany and France. Naval rivalry between Britain and Germany

Agreements or promises to defend or help another country.

Triple Entente Britain, France, Russia Triple Alliance Italy, Germany, Austria-Hungary

Trying to build up an empire by controlling a weaker nation or area.

France & Britain are annoyed by Germany’s attempts to gain colonies. Austria and Russia are competing for influences in Eastern Europe

Nationalism

France is unhappy about losing territory to Germany during the Franco-Prussian War (1871) Many different ethnic groups have been absorbed by imperialist powers, creating great conflict. Many newly formed countries have a strong sense of Nationalism.
