3 Setting the Stage The industrial revolution has completely changed countries. France & Germany fought a war in 1871 1912: A war was fought in the Balkans over territory gained in a war with Turkey

4 World War One 1914-1918 –WWI –The Great War (it wasn’t great because it was good) –The War to End All Wars 37,508,606 dead, wounded, or captured –8,538,315 dead –21,219,452 wounded –7,750,919 captured or missing

5 Main Causes Four MAIN factors led to WWI 1.Militarism 2.Alliances 3.Imperialism 4.Nationalism

6 Main Causes 1.Militarism: –Army building, even in times of peace How it led to war –No one wanted to be seen as weak –Every country had a large army.

7 Main Causes 2.Alliances: –European countries made deals with each other to help out if a war started –Two major groups Triple Alliance: Germany, Italy, and Austria-Hungary. Triple Entente: Britain, France, and Russia. How it led to war –If one country got in a war, everyone else had to help out their friends

8 Main Causes 3.Imperialism: –When a strong nation takes control of a weaker one; empire building How it led to war? –Any fights between colonies meant that the home countries would start fighting.

9 Main Causes 4.Nationalism –Extreme patriotism How it led to war –European countries start developing very strong ethnic identities.

11 All that was Needed was a Spark In June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria- Hungary, made a visit to Sarajevo, the capitol city of Bosnia.
