2 A Terrorist Attack Brings War! June 1914: Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife were shot to death as they visited Sarajevo. The assassin Gavrilo Princip was a member of the Serbian nationalist group the Black Hand.

3 Why did this go beyond Austria-Hungary? What would make other European nations join in the fight?

5 Militarism: Evidence The aggressive build-up of armed forces to intimidate or threaten other nations Countries across Europe were trying to intimidate one another with their military strength EX: Germany was beginning to build up a very strong Navy. The British felt threatened by the strength of Germany so they tried to create a Naval force that would be even stronger. -This competition started to divide these countries farther a apart

6 Alliances Evidence A union formed for a mutual benefit European countries created alliances with other nations in order to better protect themselves against their common enemies. Ex: Both France and Russia felt threatened by their common enemies (Germany & Austria-Hungary) so they joined together promising to protect each other if war came

7 Triple Alliance : Italy, Austria-Hungary, Germany Triple Entente (Allies): France, Russia, Great Britain (Italy joins in 1915)

8 Imperialism Evidence Extending a countries power and influence onto another location European nations had taken control of smaller nations during the 1700s and 1800s. These different groups began to push for their independence which caused a lot of difficulties in Europe. EX: The Serbs were under the control of Austria- Hungary and pushing for their independence Does this remind you of anything?

9 Nationalism Evidence Feeling of intense pride for your homeland In Europe, nationalists were intensely promoting their countries beliefs and interest over other countries’. Ex:  Made Europe in greater competition with one another  Pushed those who were controlled by imperialism to want their own nation
