PROJECT: MAKING A TOPOGRAPHIC MAP MATERIALS: 1 container of playdoh 1-2 feet of fishing line or dental floss 1 sheet of plain white paper 2 straws 1 pencil or dark colored pen

1. Shape the playdoh into a mountain.

2. Insert two straws through the center of the mountain from the highest point all the way to the paper then carefully pull them out leaving two holes.

3. Use a ruler and some toothpick to mark your contour levels on your mountain. Your contour intervals need to be 1 cm each.

4. Use a piece of fishing line or dental floss to slice through your mountain at each of the contour marks. (A) Carefully wrap the line around your mountain at the mark keeping the line as level to the table as possible (B) Slowly pull the line in opposite directions making the circle grow smaller and smaller as it cuts into the playdoh and all the way through.

5. Lay your largest section on the paper and put two dots on the paper through the holes. 6. Trace around the outside and then repeat with the following sections by lining up the holes and tracing their outlines until you have traced them all.

7. Label your map with the following: contour line contour interval = 1 cm highest point steepest side 1 cm 2 cm 3 cm

Grading Rubric 1. Map and pieces match. 2. Labeling 3. Neatness 8. Place your map and your pieces into a box or strong envelope and turn in to your teacher for grading.
