3 Supplies needed: 3 x 5 index card for every 2 students Scissors Ruler One sheet of white paper One sheet of construction paper Pencil Coloring utensils

4 Pick a Partner If you are messy or sloppy, choose someone who is neat and very accurate. Once you have a partner, get them an index card. Sit next to them and check to be sure they are following the directions on the next three slides precisely.

7 Making TWO 2 x 2 Cards Cut along the lines to create TWO 2 x 2 index cards 2 x 2 square

8 Sharing Hand the 2 x 2 cards to the partner who checked the work. The “checker” needs to measure the two cards and choose which one he/she will keep. Hand the other one back to your partner, put scraps in the recycle bin, and put away the rulers.

9 Creating your Tessellation With a pencil, creatively connect two consecutive corners of your 2 x 2 card Cut along the line CAREFULLY

10 Translate the piece to the opposite side of the card and tape the flat edges together (there should be NO OVERLAP).

13 Write your name, date, and class period on the index pattern. Name Date Class Period

14 Translate the shape horizontally and vertically to create a page FULL of your design. Each new drawing should fit like a puzzle piece into the ones on each side. Do not leave any gaps.

16 Finishing Touches Come up with a creative and interesting design for your tessellation. Color it completely. Mount the design on a piece of construction paper. On the back, write your name, date, and class period. On the back, also write the title of your design in quotes.

17 How Your Grade Will be Figured: Pattern WS = 10 points Name Date and Period on the Back = 5 points Title on the Back = 5 points Mounted on Construction Paper = 5 points Index Pattern = 5 points Repeating pattern (no holes) = 10 points Colored Neatly = 10 points Design Creativity = 30 points TOTAL = 80 POINTS
