1 Focus Question: How can we construct a topographic profile?
Do Now: When viewing a topographical map how is it possible to determine whether the topography represents a steep incline? On a topographical map how is a depression in the topography shown? Why can’t contour lines cross?

2 I. Contour Profile - The shape you would see if the land were sliced vertically along a line between two points on a topographic map (side view)

3 II. Steps for Drawing Topographic Profiles
1. You will need a piece of scrap paper.

4 2. We will be making a profile between points B and C
2. We will be making a profile between points B and C. Draw a straight line between these two points

5 3. The other side of your sheet has the graph we will use to plot the profile. Label this graph using the Contour interval 140 120 100 80 60 40 20

6 4. Place your scrap paper across the line we drew on the map
4. Place your scrap paper across the line we drew on the map. Every place a contour line crosses our scrap paper place a mark and label the mark with the elevation of that line

7 5. Take your scrap paper and move it to the graph on the back of the page. Transfer the tick marks we made on the scrap to the graph 140 120 100 80 60 40 20 ETC.
