Lesson Objectives: - To identify the main land uses in different Urban Zones - Be able to describe and account for differences in land use from the CBD to the edge of the city

Main Land Uses of CBD Offices – Accessible by networks (Central station, M8, M74, Buchanan Bus Station) – Can afford high rents (specialist and make high profit) –Agglomeration of services and offices e.g. Argyll Arcade Comparison Shops – Can afford high rents –High pedestrian flow…. More potential customers –Buchanan Galleries/ Princess Square –Anchor shops –Good transport links e.g queen st or central station. Accessible for workers and customers Convenience Shops – Services to offices/shoppers/ tourists for Lunches / newspaper /sweets Public Buildings – Victorian City – City Chambers, Cathedral, shows oldest part of city and Victorian wealth

Industry Tenements

Main Land Uses of Inner City Residential –C19 th workers lived by work – lack of transport and lack of money to move elsewhere Industry –Clydeside shipbuilding/ Iron works near raw materials and transport links e.g canal, river or rail Convenience shops –Cheaper rents, low cost food, still enough workers and houses to supply –Lack of comparison shops: not an up market location/ lack of prestige Open spaces –Glasgow green: leisure and fresh air in C20th

Main Land Uses of Outer Zone Residential –Quiet upbringing for family, cheaper land so can afford gardens, away from pollution Open Spaces –Rouken Glen Park, golf courses. Leisure pursuits at weekend. People have more free time and money Conv Shops –Amenities around all residential areas to cater for everyday needs Offices –Cheaper rents for small firms, estate agents prefer to be in suburbs for networking

Residential and Industrial Estates

Main Land Uses of Edge of City Residential –Large area Industrial Estates –Large open areas, cheap land, room for expansion Conv Shops –Amenities around all residential areas to cater for everyday needs Offices –Purposely built estates
