1 Changes in the CBD Match the description to the explanation
Description of change Why did this change happen One way streets To make the best use of limited space due to high CBD bid rents Indoor shopping malls (Buchanan Galleries) To stop vehicles parking on the roads which clogs up the streets creating traffic congestion Pedestrianised streets To keep traffic flowing around the CBD Multi-storey car parks To keep traffic away and create a safe space for shoppers Tall buildings To allow people access to higher order shopping no matter the weather. Modern glass buildings To improve the look of the CBD and create energy efficient buildings

2 Changes in the Inner City Match the description to the explanation
Description of change Why did this change happen Renovation of old tenement buildings To create local jobs for people and provide opportunities for leisure time. Opening of new public services and shops To improve the overall environment and look of the area and attract more families to stay here. Providing open spaces and parks To improve the quality of housing in the Gorbals and provide more spacious accommodation for families. Knocked down the high rise and built new apartments To clean the old buildings and improve the quality of the housing in the Gorbals at a low cost.

3 Shopping in the Suburbs
Advantages Disadvantages Lots of space to expand the shopping centre. Traffic is less congested as the centre is away from the CBD. The development takes away the countryside and greenbelt Land is cheaper so parking can be made free for shoppers. Deliveries can be made quickly and easily due to out of town motorway links. Public transport is not common out of town which means some people will be unable to visit. Traffic is worse close to the centre which creates a new traffic congestion hot spot. Centres are usually undercover which means people can shop even in the Winter. The development creates lots of visual pollution in the suburbs New services open around the shopping centre Parking is free ,this attracts more customers making more money for business Creates jobs for people away from the busy CBD

4 Traffic Congestion Cause Solution
Cars are cheap so lots of people have one Bus lanes mean buses can travel quickly at peak times Park and ride schemes mean that 30+ can park and take the bus into the city By passes or ring roads take mean people can travel at speed without going into the city Technology makes it easier to track buses making travel more convenient Bottle necks and bridging points reduce the traffic to one lane People live outside the city and commute to and from work daily Narrow streets with grid iron pattern are common in the CBD Cobbled streets are windy roads are common in Edinburgh Expensive parking charges put people off parking on the street Improvements in rail travel mean more people leave the car at home Events mean people travel to the city
