Welcome to my presentation on problems foreigners can experience living abroad. In this presentation, I’m going to give you a brief overview of 3 main problems I’ve had living in a foreign country. The first issue I had was language; it was very difficult to communicate with Vietnamese people. So what was the solution? The solution was to study Vietnamese. Let me expand this issue further. Vietnamese is a language very unlike Roman languages I experienced problems not only because of pronunciation but also because of grammar. Now I’d like to move on to the question of CULTURE. Vietnamese culture is very different to Western culture. So what did I do? I decided to take a course on Vietnamese culture. To elaborate further, some of the cultural issues I had were, how to queue, how to talk to people older than me, and how to follow rules when eating. Ok, now let’s turn to FOOD. Food is one area which I still have problems with. To answer the question of food, let me go back to my previous point. I believe food and culture, go hand in hand. Food mirrors the culture of a country. Food was a massive problem for me at first, but what exactly was the problem? The problem was I found it difficult to get used to the type of food. To digress for a moment, let’s consider the people in England. England has one of the highest obesity rates in the whole world. The type of food in England is somewhat different to here. To recap and summarise, LANGUAGE, CULTURE, and FOOD were just 3 of some of the issues I had trying to assimilate to life in Vietnam. Did I overcome my problems? What do you think?
