Communicating Effectively Healthy relationships depend on good communication skills. Careful listening is important for effective communication. Careful listening shows that you are interested in what the other person wants to share

What I Learned Vocabulary Define communication. Lesson 1 Review Communication is the exchange of information through the use of words or actions.

What I Learned Identify What are the two types of communication? Lesson 1 Review Verbal and nonverbal are the two types of communication.

What I Learned Give Examples List two ways to show that you are listening carefully. Lesson 1 Review Any two: use proper body language - picture page 175 offer words of encouragement do not interrupt ask questions for clarification mirror what the speaker says Picture on page 176 Picture on page 177

What I Learned Explain Explain how body language plays a part in communication. Lesson 1 Review Sample answer: Body language gives words extra meaning. It can reinforce meaning or send a different message. Body language also shows that you are listening carefully.

Thinking Critically Apply Imagine you are having an emotional discussion with a friend. Each of your friend’s comments begin with “You always…” or “You make me feel…” and other similar phrases. How would you react to hearing them? Lesson 1 Review Sample answer: I would feel attacked or criticized.

Thinking Critically Synthesize What are some nonverbal ways to show consideration for others? Lesson 1 Review Sample answer: waving, smiling, applauding, or high-fiving

Applying Health Skills Communication Skills Using tact is an important skill. Imagine that a friend asked for your opinion about a jacket he or she was thinking about buying. You don’t think the jacket looks good. How might you give your opinion honestly But tactfully? Lesson 1 Review Answer should include statements about the jacket that will not hurt the other person’s feeling.
