Measuring Ozone Using a Zikua

The Zikua measures ozone First tested in Africa Zikua is a Swahili word. Zikua means “seeing the invisible” Discovered an ozone problem in Africa from biomass burning

GLOBE Program Students making measurements to help us better understand the Earth. The GLOBE Program

How to make Ozone

Global observations

Researching Ozone Locally Reading Ozone Level What’s the wind speed?

Posting Data

What we will measure QuantityUnits Time … … ….. hour and minutes Ozone … … … parts per billion (ppb) Temperature….. degress Centegrade Humidity …. … … … % Wind direction … …. N, S, E, W Cloud type … … … cloud names

Materials for measuring 1 Ozone strip Zikua 1 thermometer Wind direction measurer* Cloud Chart Hygrometer for humidity Ozone data recording sheet

The “ECOBADGE” 1--hour test Compare color to chart

Zikua: Making the Invisible, Visible

Roles Data recorder Ozone strip Clouds Humidity Temperature Wind Direction

Procedure 1. Calibrate the Scanner  put it on a table top  Press button #1 until it displays CALIB  Press button #2 to select WHT PAPER  Press buttons #1 and 2 together (to save)  (It should read 000)

In the Field Put a fresh new ozone strip in the holder DO NOT TOUCH THE CHEMICAL AREA Record the time. Measure the temperature, humidity, cloud type, and wind direction Leave the ozone strip for 1 hour

After 1 hour Collect all of the data again:  Time, temperature, wind direction, humidity, cloud type Read the ozone strip with the Zikua  Carefully pick up the ozone strip.  Turn on the Zikua and put it on a flat surface  (not in sunlight)  Slide the strip into the top of the Zikua. Center it.  Record the ppb on the data sheet.

How much Ozone? Low  0 to 20 ppb Normal  ppb High  > 60 ppb
