1 What is Weather? Investigation 1: Part 2 TG-P.48-50

2 Weather is the condition of Earth’s atmosphere at any given time in a given place.

3 Write a weather report: a brief description of the current weather.

4 Components of Weather What types of information are included in your weather report or forecast? Temperature ∙ Cloud Cover Humidity ∙ Predictions for future weather Wind Speed ∙ Visibility Wind Direction ∙ Air Pressure

5 Professional Reports Temperature Forecast Cloud conditions Wind Speed
Pressure Humidity Direction TG-P.51 Visibility

6 Weather Reports & Forecasts
TG-P.51

7 Weather Vocabulary Temperature - how hot or cold the air is
Humidity - the amount of water vapor in the air Wind- the movement of air from a location of high pressure to area of low pressure so pressure equalizes Wind Direction - the direction from which the wind is coming Wind Speed - how fast the air is moving past a measuring point Pressure- the force of air pushing in all directions Visibility- the distance one can see through the air TG-P.51

8 Compass- used to determine the direction from which wind is coming
Thermometer - measures temperature Barometer – measures air pressure Anemometer - measures wind speed TG-P.52 Wind vane - measures wind direction Hygrometer - measures humidity

9 Visibility Is how far you can see (maximum is 7 miles or 11 km)
Weather factors that might limit visibility… Fog, clouds, haze, smog, rain, snow, dust Determine visibility? View distant landmarks (mountains, towers, buildings, etc) TG-P.52

10 Class Weather Chart What might be included in “Other Observations?
TG-P.52 Special Teacher Masters-TG-P. 355 Clouds Precipitation Color/Shade of sky

11 Time to Go Outside Practice using tools
For scientific investigation, not recreation Readings always made in same location Each group work with all tools Anemometer and compass used together

12 Units for Measurements
_________ is measured in ________ Temperature - degrees Fahrenheit ˚F or Celsius ˚C Pressure - millibars (mb) Humidity - percent % Wind speed - mph or km/h (miles per hour) Wind direction - the direction the wind is coming from (N, S, E, W) TG-P.53

13 Record the Weather Observations
Turn to the Class Weather Chart page in Inv 1 Record the data on your weather chart Student Lab Notebook - p.1
