1 Chapter 3: Earth’s Systems and Cycles
Today’s Objective: By the end of class, you should be able to explain how color can affect the transfer of heat.

2 Agenda The Packet Explore Activity: Read & Fill in the Blanks
Explore Activity: Set-up Anticipation Guide The Big Idea, California Standards, & Academic Vocabulary Explore Activity: Analysis Line of Learning Clean-up Homework

3 The Packet Packet Cover – You design it! Table of Contents
Grade Recording Sheet Opportunities for Extra Credit Personal Word Wall Vocabulary Definitions and Illustrations Anticipation Guide and Line of Learning The Big Idea, California Standards and Academic Vocabulary Explore Activity Bellringer Quick Lab

4 Grade Recording Sheet You need to record your grade for each assignment on this page. You can calculate your grade at any time! When we complete the chapter, your packet will be collected.

5 Opportunities for Extra Credit
Standards Assessment Interactive Reader and Study Guide Four-Corner Fold Illustration for a Word on the Science Word Wall

6 Personal Word Wall Vocabulary Definitions and Illustrations
We are going to have a Science Word Wall for important words to know! The words will be posted on the wall and you will have them on your Personal Word Wall in your packet. You are going to also include definitions and illustrations.

7 Explore Activity: Heat Transfer by Radiation
Action Steps (Before We Can Start The Lab!) In your textbook on Page 83 read the Explore Activity. In your packet on Pages fill in the blanks for the Purpose and Procedure, then write your Hypothesis

8 Expore Activity: Heat Transfer by Radiation
Purpose In this lab, you will observe temperature variations due to the transfer of heat by radiation. Materials Construction paper, black and white (1 sheet each) Stapler Thermometers

9 Explore Activity: Heat Transfer by Radiation
Procedure: Fold a piece of black construction paper in half lengthwise to form a sleeve into which a thermometer can be inserted. Use a stapler to secure the bottom and side of the sleeve. Use a piece of white construction paper to make a second sleeve. Use two identical thermometers to observe and record the room temperature. Insert one thermometer into the black sleeve. Insert the other thermometer into the white sleeve. Place the sleeves, including their thermometers, side-by-side in direct sunlight. Put them where nobody will touch them. After 15 minutes, observe and record the temperature reading on each thermometer.

10 Explore Activity: Heat Transfer by Radiation
Data Collection Write the temperatures of both thermometers before and after (remember to write the units!) Analysis Questions How did the thermometer readings differ after 15 minutes? How did color affect the transfer of heat?

11 Anticipation Guide This is a chance for you to see how much you already know about what we are going to be studying. Write True or False in the box next to each statement. We will come back to this when we finish the chapter…

12 The Big Idea, CA Standards & Academic Vocabulary
What is this chapter all about and what are we going to be learning? This activity will help you answer those questions! Action Steps (Packet Pages 11-13): Write The Big Idea (see Page 82 in your textbook). Read the California Standards and what they mean – when we finish the chapter you will write about why they matter! Finally, use the Glossary in your textbook to find the definitions of the academic vocabulary words listed.

13 Line of Learning We will do the Line of Learning each day at the end of class. You will have five minutes to write a few sentences about what you learned in class that day. When you are writing you should look at the objective for today – can you explain it? Today’s Objective: By the end of class, you should be able to explain how color can affect the transfer of heat.

14 Homework Quick Lab: Rising Heat Reminder: Homework Assignments Log
You need to read the Quick Lab on Page 86 in your textbook and fill in the blanks on Page 21 in your packet. You need to complete this assignment so that you can participate in the lab. Reminder: Homework Assignments Log You need to have your parent or guardian sign the sheet when you have completed your homework. This will be checked tomorrow!
