1 Weather Conditions Chapter 1

2 A Property of Air Everything around you is matter. Matter is anything that takes up space and has weight. In this investigation you will observe a property of air. Then you will infer whether air is matter. Observe investigation led by Miss B Answer these next questions on theme paper heading : Name HR/Roster “Property of Air LAB”

3 Explain how this investigation shows that air takes up space (mass).
Describe what happened when one balloon was popped. This shows what about air? Your breath is invisible, but you observed how it made the balloons and the scale behave. Even though you can’t see air, what can you infer about whether or not air is matter? Explain.

4 Chapter 1 Lesson 1 Earth’s Atmosphere
Vocabulary terms Atmosphere- the layer of air that surrounds our planet Air pressure- particles of air pressing down on Earth’s surface Troposphere- the layer of atmosphere closest to Earth Stratosphere-the layer of atmosphere that contains ozone and is located above the troposphere

5 With a partner read pages D6 and D7
Write down things you think are important Copybook heading: Earth’s Atmosphere The Air You Breathe

6 *THE AIR PRESSURE IS LESS AS YOU GO HIGHER IN THE ATMOSPHERE*
Air takes up space and has weight All the particles of air pressing down on the surface cause _________________. Air pressure changes as you go higher in the atmosphere At the surface of Earth, air particles are ________ ____________. The higher you go in the atmosphere, the __________ ____________ the particles are. *THE AIR PRESSURE IS LESS AS YOU GO HIGHER IN THE ATMOSPHERE*

7 With a partner read pages D8 and D9
Write down things you think are important Copybook heading: Atmosphere Layer

8 The four layers that make up the earth’s atmosphere are
_______________- weather ( temperature DECREACES as it goes up) _______________- ozone ( above most weather and temperature INCREASES with height) _______________ - very cold (temperature DECREASES with height) _______________- top layer (temperature INCREASES quickly with height **VERY HOT**

9 Chapter 1 lesson 2 Air and Weather Vocabulary Terms Greenhouse effect- the warming of Earth caused by the atmosphere trapping thermal energy from the sun Air mass- a huge body of air which all has similar temperature and moisture Front- the border where two air masses meet

10 Air and the Sun Weather begins with the sun The sun provides energy for making weather The amount of the sun’s energy reaching the Earth is not the same everywhere (more at the equator than the poles) The uneven heating is part of what causes air to move and what makes weather Most of the sun’s energy never reaches the Earth The atmosphere traps the heat called the greenhouse effect (without this Earth’s surface would be too cold to support life)

11 Checking Out Fronts in the United States
What can you tell me about the map? Hopefully after this chapter you will be able to better explain this map!

12 With a partner read pages D13
Write down things you think are important Copybook heading: Air Masses

13 Air Masses Two properties of air masses
_______________ Moist air masses form over water Dry air masses form over land Cold air masses form near Earth’s poles Warm air masses form near the equator

14 With a partner read pages D14-D15
Write down things you think are important Copybook heading: Air Masses Meet

15 very low, then sharp rise
Air Masses Meet Cold Front Forms when a _____________________catches up to a warm air mass The colder air mass forces the warmer air up into the atmosphere As the warm air is pushed upward, it _______ and forms clouds Rain develops and often _________ occur along a cold front Cold Front While Passing After passing winds temperature sudden drop air pressure very low, then sharp rise rising steadily rain showers, then clearing

16 Warm Front Forms when a ________________ catches up to a cold air mass The warm air slides up over the colder, denser air Clouds form, steady rain or snow may fall as the front approaches and passes The sky becomes clear of clouds and the temperature becomes __________

17 Stationary Front Stays in _____________ for several days Constant fall of snow or rain can leave behind many inches of snow or cause a flood

18 Chapter 1 Lesson 3 vocabulary Weather Prediction Barometer- Humidity- Anemometer-

19 With a partner read pages D20-21
Write down things you think are important Copybook heading Measuring Weather

20 Measuring Weather _____________________________ are the scientists who study and measure weather conditions __________________ measure the temperature __________________ measures air pressure __________________ measures wind speed

21 Mapping and Charting Weather Scientists record their data on ______ and _______ to predict the weather Weather maps use symbols to show weather conditions Warm front Cold front Rain Snow
