The Weimar Republic After WWI, Germany was hurting economically, politically, and socially. In 1919, the Weimar Republic was established. –Assembly drafted a new constitution. –Political instability and violence erupted. –Some German citizens were upset because the leaders of the Weimar Republic accepted the terms to the Treaty of Versailles. Germans were to pay reparations of $35 billion. Germany could not pay France, so French troops marched in to the Ruhr Valley and took control of coal mines and steel mills. Government printed more and more money…making money worth less. U.S. set up the Dawes plan to help Germany…French leave Ruhr Valley.

Rise of Nazism National Socialist Workers’ party = NAZI Adolf Hitler –Born in Austria, 1889 –Formed the Brownshirts to seize power of the government. –Hitler was arrested for starting trouble…while in jail he wrote Mein Kampf (My Struggle). Germans were not at fault for losing the Great War, but should blame Jews and communists. He declared Germans were the master race. Saw himself as the leader that would unite all German speaking people into a new empire. –Once released from jail…1929—Great Depression…he appealed to German citizens. –1930s Nazis won a large number of seats in Reichstag—lower house. –1933, he became Chancellor of Germany. –The Nazis had come to power.
