Design and Layout (part two) Art Principles of Design (Drawing Concepts)

Review: Elements of Art The Elements of Art are fundamental ideas about the practice of good visual design. They include: Line Tells the eye where to look. Shape / Form An enclosed space whose boundaries are defined by other art elements (i.e space, line, texture, value, color, or shape). Value The relative difference between light and dark in an image

Review: Elements of Art The Elements of Art are fundamental ideas about the practice of good visual design. They include: Space / Perspective Perceived distance between objects. The approximate representation of a 3D object on a flat (2D) surface Texture How an image appears to “feel” if touched Color Represents emotion Helps objects to stand out from the background

Does this work of art contain all or only some of the elements of art? Art Elements Line Shape Form Value Space Perspective Texture Color

Art Principles of Design: Vocabulary Assignment (with pictures) Balance Repetition Symmetrical Variety Asymmetrical Unity Radial Harmony Emphasis Proportion Contrast Movement Pattern

Art Principles of Design (Drawing Concepts) The principles of design are the ways that artists use the Elements of Art to create good compositions (artwork). The tools used to organize the elements of art are: Balance Emphasis Contrast Movement Pattern Repetition Variety Unity Harmony Proportion

Three Types of Balance Balance is a way of combining elements to add a feeling of equilibrium or stability to a work of art. Symmetrical sides are exactly the same Asymmetrical sides appear visually weighted the same Radial everything is arranged around a center

Symmetrical Balance

Asymmetrical Balance

Radial Balance

How Balance Is Used Symmetry is when a page or its elements are perfectly balanced. There are four (4) types of symmetry: Reflection (Bilateral) Rotational (Radial) Translational Asymmetry

Reflection Symmetry Reflection (Bilateral) Symmetry – mirror effect, an image reflected across a vertical axis.

Rotational Symmetry Rotational (Radial) Symmetry – when an object is rotated in a certain direction around a point. (Radial Balance)

Translational Symmetry Translational Symmetry – when an object is relocated to another position while maintaining its general or exact orientation.

Asymmetry Asymmetry – when one or more elements on a page are not balanced; used to create interest.

EXERCISE In pairs, identify as many of the principles of design that we have covered so far as you can from the graphic below and present your findings to the class. Find items exemplifying Symmetrical, Asymmetrical, and / or Radial balance, Reflection, Rotational, Translational and Asymmetrical Symmetry.

EXERCISE Campus Walk Objective: Have something to take notes with: paper, pen / pencil, phone, notebook, handbook, etc. Objective: Find items on campus that exemplify Symmetrical, Asymmetrical, and / or Radial balance. Explain the types of balance that are used in the object.

Emphasis Emphasis The foreground or any focal piece in a work of art Emphasis is created by combining elements to stress the differences between them

Contrast Contrast When two related elements are different (color, shapes, lines, space - proximity) Adds visual interest

Movement Movement patterns or flow that leads the eye to key details

Pattern Pattern A discernible regularity that occurs in the natural or a manmade environment

Variety Variety is achieved when the art elements are combined in various ways to increase visual interest.

Unity Unity is when all of the main design principles are combined to create an image that makes sense to the viewer. Balance Emphasis Contrast Movement Pattern Repetition Variety Unity Harmony Proportion

Harmony Harmony means all parts of the visual image relate to and complement each other.

Proportion Proportion describes the size, location or amount of one element to another (or to the whole) in a work.

Summary The Principles of Design are the ways that artists use the Elements of Art to create good compositions (artwork). The Elements of Art are fundamental ideas about the practice of good visual design. They include: Line Form Shape Value Space Texture Color

Summary The principles of design are tools used to organize the elements of art are: Balance Emphasis Contrast Movement Pattern Repetition Variety Unity Harmony Proportion
