1 Design and Layout (part two)
Art Principles of Design (Drawing Concepts)

2 CONTENT STANDARD 5.0 UNDERSTAND THE ELEMENTS OF ART AND PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN AND COMPOSITION
CTE Design, Visual and Media Arts Pathway A1.0 Demonstrate ability to reorganize and integrate visual art elements across digital media and design applications. A1.2 Identify and use the principles of design to discuss, analyze, and create projects and products across multiple industry applications. A2.6 Create an artistic product that involves the effective use of the elements of art and the principles of design. A4.0 Analyze, assess, and identify effectiveness of artistic products based on elements of art, the principles of design, and professional industry standards.

3 CONTENT STANDARD 5.0 UNDERSTAND THE ELEMENTS OF ART AND PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN AND COMPOSITION
Visual and Performing Arts: Visual Arts Content Standards (CA) 9-12 Proficient 1.0 ARTISTIC PERCEPTION Processing, Analyzing, and Responding to Sensory Information Through the Language and Skills Unique to the Visual Arts Students perceive and respond to works of art, objects in nature, events, and the environment. They also use the vocabulary of the visual arts to express their observations. Develop Perceptual Skills and Visual Arts Vocabulary 1.1 Identify and use the principles of design to discuss, analyze, and write about visual aspects in the environment and in works of art, including their own. 1.2 Describe the principles of design as used in works of art, focusing on dominance and subordination. Analyze Art Elements and Principles of Design 1.4 Analyze and describe how the composition of a work of art is affected by the use of a particular principle of design.

7 Review: Elements of Art
The Elements of Art are fundamental ideas about the practice of good visual design. They include: Line Tells the eye where to look. Shape / Form An enclosed space whose boundaries are defined by other art elements (i.e space, line, texture, value, color, or shape). Value The relative difference between light and dark in an image

8 Review: Elements of Art
The Elements of Art are fundamental ideas about the practice of good visual design. They include: Space / Perspective Perceived distance between objects. The approximate representation of a 3D object on a flat (2D) surface Texture How an image appears to “feel” if touched Color Represents emotion Helps objects to stand out from the background

9 Does this work of art contain all or only some of the Elements of Art?

11 Principles of Design (Drawing Concepts)
The principles of design are the ways that artists use the Elements of Art (fundamental ideas about what constitutes good visual design) to create “good” pieces of artwork. The tools used to organize the elements of art are: Balance Emphasis Contrast Movement Pattern Repetition Variety Unity Harmony Proportion

12 Balance Balance in a composition involves arranging both positive elements and negative space in such a way that no one area of the design overpowers other areas. It is a way of combining elements to add a feeling of stability to a work of art. When artwork is balanced, every part of it holds some interest for the viewer. An unbalanced composition can lead to tension or uncomfortable feelings for the viewer. In some projects, unbalanced might be right for the message you’re trying to communicate, but generally you want balanced compositions. Without visual balance, viewers might not see all areas of the design and miss some of the information the artist is trying to convey.

13 Three Types of Balance Balance is a way of combining elements to add a feeling of equilibrium or stability to a work of art. Symmetrical sides are exactly the same Asymmetrical sides appear visually weighted the same Radial everything is arranged around a center

14 Symmetrical Balance

15 Asymmetrical Balance

16 Radial Balance

17 PRESENTATION: BALANCE
Campus Walk Have something to take notes with: paper, writing utensil, phone, notebook, etc. In groups of three, check out a camera. Objective: Find items on campus that exemplify Symmetrical, Asymmetrical, and Radial balance, respectively. Take a picture of each item and make a note of the type of balance exemplified. You should have a total of three (3) pictures. Be sure the lens and the camera are set to auto. Pay attention to lighting. Review pictures BEFORE returning to classroom. Return and upload to Google drive. SHARE YOUR PICTURES WITH EACH GROUP MEMBER! Someone being absent will not accepted as an excuse for not being able to present. The group will receive a zero. Use your pictures to prepare a slide presentation on balance: Tell the type of balance each picture shows. Each group member must introduce themselves to the class and speak in order to receive credit.

18 How Balance Is Used Symmetry is when a page or its elements are perfectly balanced. There are four (4) types of symmetry: Reflection (Bilateral) Rotational (Radial) Translational Asymmetry

19 Reflection Symmetry Reflection (Bilateral) Symmetry – mirror effect, an image reflected across a vertical axis.

20 Rotational Symmetry Rotational (Radial) Symmetry – when an object is rotated in a certain direction around a point. (Radial Balance)

21 Translational Symmetry
Translational Symmetry – when an object is relocated to another position while maintaining its general or exact orientation.

22 Asymmetry Asymmetry – when one or more elements on a page are not balanced; used to create interest.

23 PRESENTATION: SYMMETRY
Create a New Document in Photoshop You may separate one document into multiple sections or you may use separate documents Using the skills you have learned so far, create examples of each of the four (4) types of symmetry: Reflection (Bilateral) Rotational (Radial) Translational Asymmetry Be prepared to present and explain your artwork to the class.

24 Emphasis Emphasis The foreground or any focal piece in a work of art
Emphasis is created by combining elements to stress the differences between them

25 Contrast Contrast When two related elements are different (color, shapes, lines, space - proximity) Adds visual interest

26 Movement Movement patterns or flow that leads the eye to key details

27 Pattern Pattern A discernible regularity that occurs in the natural or a manmade environment

28 Variety Variety is achieved when the art elements are combined in various ways to increase visual interest.

29 Unity Unity is when all of the main design principles are combined to create an image that makes sense to the viewer. Balance Emphasis Contrast Movement Pattern Repetition Variety Unity Harmony Proportion

30 Harmony Harmony means all parts of the visual image relate to and complement each other.

31 Proportion Proportion describes the size, location or amount of one element to another (or to the whole) in a work.

32 Summary The Principles of Design are ways that artists use the Elements of Art to create good compositions (artwork). The Elements of Art are fundamental ideas about the practice of good visual design. They include: Line Form Shape Value Space Texture Color

33 Summary The Principles of Design tools used to organize the elements of art are: Balance Repetition Emphasis Variety Contrast Unity Movement Harmony Pattern Proportion
