Background Standards in Education Task Force (SETF) formed in 2003 –A collaboration between the SA and EAB –Develop web-based standards-related educational resources. IEEE Foundation grant for NSF grant for the years Currently seeking a second NSF grant Educational Activities support moving forward

Background Standards Education Committee (SEC) –Joint Committee of the EAB and IEEE SA BoG –The SEC is made up of four members from the SA and four members of the EAB plus corresponding members. Additionally, several individuals are actively contributing to the work of the committee

Background In 2008, the Educational Activities Department established a formal Standards Education Program. Operates in close cooperation with, and oversight by SEC. – The program serves as the coordination point for SEC activities. – Standards Education Program activities are not currently intended to generate revenue.

Mission of the SEC 1.Promote the importance of standards in meeting technical, economic, environmental, and societal challenges. 2.Secure and disseminate learning materials on the application of standards in the design and development aspects of educational programs. 3.Secure and provide short courses about standards needed in the design and development phases of professional practice. 4.Actively promote the integration of standards into academic programs. 5.Lead other education initiatives planned jointly by EAB and the SA as needed. 27-Jan-166

Standards Education Objectives and Goals The objectives and goals set for Standards Education aim to address the needs of students, educators and practicing professionals. Objective: Establish the IEEE as the global one-stop source for educational information about technical standards 27-Jan-167

Standards Education Objectives and Goals –Develop standards-related online tutorials and case studies for university students and professors –Conduct workshops/seminars for practicing professionals –Develop and implement plan for a “Standards Speaker’s Bureau” or “Standards Distinguished Lecturer” program –Improve the Standards Education website with increased content and better usability –Maintain a repository of information on available standards education programs and resources outside of the IEEE –Actively participate in key standards education organizations and conferences –Pursue potential partnership opportunities with other standards education developers

Standards Education Objectives and Goals Objective: Influence accreditation policy to encourage incorporating standards into curricula –SEC, BoG and EAB approved a new IEEE Policy Paper on, “The Role of Technical Standards in Curriculum of Academic Programs in Engineering, Technology and Computing.  Paper will go to the IEEE Board of Directors for approval/adoption in June –Develop learning materials for educators on how to incorporate teaching standards in the classroom 27-Jan-169

Current Activities Standards Education website: On-line tutorials and case studies are publicly available at no-cost Developed to help introduce and teach undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professors and educators, about technical standards. Tutorials available: –Role of Standards in Engineering & Technology –Role of Standards in Cellular Telephony –Role of Standards in Electrical Power Systems –SystemVerilog to be released in March 2009 –5 new tutorials and 4 cases studies are in development in the areas of IEEE 802, , Biometric Testing Standards, Intellectual Property, Metric Units –More are needed

Current Activities Case Studies available: –Wireless Router –Multimode Mobile Phone –Three new cases in development for Metric Units and Intellectual Property –More are needed Student Application Papers –Small grants are available for students and faculty advisors for graduate and senior design projects with an industry standards component. Results are published as a student application papers. –SEC has approved 9 student grants to date Other resources available: Glossary of Standards Terms and Standards Reference Directory

Conferences/Seminars/Workshops One of the goals of the SEC is to hold two workshops per year for practicing professionals SEC conducted market research in Sept/Oct 2008 in order to determine interest and establish long-term plans for future standards education workshops or conferences –1,057 IEEE Members participated –Respondents indicated that they (57%) or others in their company (67%) would be interested in training on technical standards –41% responded that they would be likely to very likely to attend an in-person workshop, preferably for one day –Full summary of the survey is available 27-Jan-1612

Conferences/Seminars/Workshops First Standards Education workshop was held at Globecom 2007 in Washington, DC, and focused on the family of IEEE 802 Wireless standards. –This one and one-half day pilot workshop had 43 attendees. Planning is underway for one-day Standards Education Workshop on IEEE 802 Standards at Globecom 2009 in November. Working with SA Staff to determine future opportunities.

Standards Lecturers Program SA is leading the development and implementation of a “Standards Speaker’s Bureau” or “Standards Distinguished Lecturer” program (name TBD) –Standards-equivalent to the IEEE’s Distinguished Lecturer Program Creating a database of experienced standards volunteers willing to contribute to education about standards and the standards process –Opportunity to involve volunteers in speaking engagements in locations where they are already traveling on business 27-Jan-1614

How Standards Board Members Can Help Help publicize the activities of the SEC and the content available Contribute as a subject matter expert by creating tutorials and case studies Agree to peer review content in your areas of expertise Contribute by offering to speak at a conference/seminar/meeting Volunteer to join the SEC as a member or participant 27-Jan-1615
