2 2012 Capstone Design Conference http://www.capstoneconf.org/ http://www.capstoneconf.org/ May 30 - June 1, 2012 in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois Theme: Industry Involvement Goal of Capstone Design Conferences: –to provide a forum for engineering and applied science faculty to share ideas about improving design-based capstone courses. –2012 conference will include panel discussions, interactive poster presentations, workshops, keynote sessions and many opportunities for networking. Expect 200 to 250 attendees SEC Ad-hoc has held three conference calls, including one call with two Conference Organizing Committee members –Organizing committee is expecting our proposal for panel session 2/21/20162

3 Proposed Panel Session Overview Title: Standards Education and Industry: An interactive session addressing the importance of including technical standards education in engineering curricula and the needs of industry. Sponsored by the SEC and ASTM International Five to six panelists and one moderator who represent industry, academia and SDO’s. Panel session will be 90 minutes long –Requesting that, if possible, the session be run twice, back to back, during the conference to allow as much participation as possible. Panelists would each give a short 10-minute presentation or talk addressing their particular areas of expertise and interest. –Moderator will entertain questions and comments from attendees and request panelists to address them. 2/21/20163

4 Panel Session Draft Goals: 1)To discuss the importance of learning standards in a global economy and employer expectations for engineering graduates in the USA. 2)To highlight the fundamentals of engineering standards including how they are developed, applied, maintained, and enhanced. 3)To detail the current ABET requirements with respect to standards in engineering curricula and spread awareness of the joint IEEE-ANSI Position Paper on the Role of Standards in the Curriculum. 4)To identify ways that current professors are including standards in the classroom, specifically how standards are being incorporated into Capstone Design projects. 5)To demonstrate a case study on selection and application of standards in a capstone project 6)To identify resources available from Standards Development Organizations (SDOs), such as IEEE, ASTM International, and ANSI, for students and professors to obtain standards documents, student grants, and other educational resources. 2/21/20164

Academia rep) **Bob Noth, former President ANSI BoD, John Deere –(Jim O will contact. Bob is located in Northbrook, IL. 6 Logistics & Budget Exhibits and promotion –Exhibit table includes recognition on conference website and one complimentary conference registration ($1,000) –Conference program ad: half or full page ($100 to $500) –Bag inserts: flyers, brochures or other promotional material to be included in each attendees conference bag ($100 to $500) –Total exhibit and promotion costs: up to $2,000 Participant and Staff Travel –IEEE will cover the conference fee (estimate $150 each) and any necessary travel costs for the moderator and panelists. Estimate budget up to $3,000 –Staff travel: Estimate $1,000 –ASTM funding own travel and exhibit table Total estimated budget: $6,000 2/21/20166
