4. Standards Education Committee (SEC)
Joint Standing Committee of the IEEE Educational Activities Board and the IEEE Standards Association Board of Governors
Mission:
Promote the importance of standards in meeting technical, economic, environmental, and societal challenges.
Secure and disseminate learning materials on the application of standards in the design and development aspects of educational programs.
Secure and provide short courses about standards needed in the design and development phases of professional practice.
Actively promote the integration of standards into academic programs.

6. IEEE’s interests in Standards Education
Accrediting bodies need to clarify the degree to which understanding and use of standards are expected in engineering/computing/technology programs
In the US the current ABET accreditation criteria are often too vague and hence unenforceable
In 2009, IEEE approved the IEEE Position Paper on the Role of Technical Standards in the Curriculum of Academic Programs in Engineering, Technology and Computing
States the desired role of technical standards in the academic curriculum;
To be used in model curriculum development and in discussions with accrediting bodies.
Adopted by the National Policy Committee of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

7. IEEE’s interests in Standards Education
Standards are of growing significance to industry
Practicing professionals need to understand how to use standards
In October 2008 survey of 1,000 IEEE members who were practicing engineers:
75% indicated that technical standards were important or very important in their field
22% indicated that they learned to apply technical standards in university
Majority learned from a mentor or were self-taught
Further suggests the importance of introducing standards to students and into curricula

Hundreds of universities and colleges worldwide have full access to IEEE standards through their subscriptions to the IEEE Electronic Library (IEEE Xplore®)
provides access to IEEE journals, transactions, letters, magazines and conference proceedings, IEEE Standards and IEEE educational courses

11. Standards Education Content
IEEE Standards Education Tutorials are designed to help students, educators and practicing engineers better understand technical standards by exploring the role of standards in engineering and technology, and by providing real-world examples of the application of standards.
Case Studies are examples of the application of standards in a real-world context:
describe the application of standards to achieve a specific design objective;
begin with a posed task, e.g., consider what standards might be applicable to the design of a multi-mode telephone;
identify potentially applicable standards;
determine design and development constraints imposed by standards;
explore proposed solutions.

13. IEEE Student Mini-Grants
To support goal of promoting the integration of standards into academic programs, IEEE is offering Grants to both students and faculty mentors to help with graduate and capstone design projects with an industry standards component.
$500 for students
$300 for faculty advisors
IEEE publishes the results as a Student Application Paper
2009: 45 submitted/28 approved
2010: 29 submitted/17 approved
Applications came from students in all IEEE Regions, except Region 9.

Applications may be submitted at any time throughout the year. The Standards Education Committee (SEC) will review applications according to the following schedule:

Complete and release new Global Standards Search web portal.
Develop and begin publishing Standards Education e-Zine.
Continue to address standards in the curricula
Develop strategy for influencing ABET Criteria

Determine their needs and the best way to serve them.
Hold pilot seminars/workshops aimed at students and/or educators.
Develop region-based standards education strategies
