12-CRS-0106 12/12 SEC Mission 1.Promote the importance of standards in meeting technical, economic, environmental, and societal challenges 2.Secure and disseminate learning materials on the application of standards in the design and development aspects of educational programs 3.Secure and provide short courses about standards needed in the design and development phases of professional practice 4.Actively promote the integration of standards into academic programs 5.Lead other education initiatives planned jointly by EAB and the SA as needed 9/9/20154

12-CRS-0106 12/12 What is IEEE Standards Education? Educating students about standards –their critical role in the workforce and society Providing resources for students –to help with the inclusion of technical standards into their studies Teaching the open standards development process –to provide understanding of the intersection of economics, technology, and politics that are integral to standardization –The ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘where’, ‘why’ and ‘how’ of standards Providing resources for university professors –to facilitate the incorporation of standards topics into their courses Continuing efforts to more widely influence the inclusion of technical standards into university curricula Delivering technical content about specific areas of standardization 9/9/20155

12-CRS-0106 12/12 Audience for Standards Education For those in the fields of engineering, technology, and computing (ETC), business, economics, and law – College and University Educators – Undergraduate and Graduate Students – Professionals 9/9/20156

12-CRS-0106 12/12 Ongoing Activities 9/9/20157 Standards Education Grants for Students –incorporating technical standards into design projects Education Workshops on Technical Standards and Consensus Building for students and educators Standards Student Paper Competitions –usually regional and linked to student branches Outreach and Speaking Events –to colleges/universities and professional conferences Standards Education e-Magazine –a publication for those who learn, teach, use, deploy, develop and enjoy Standards Standards Education websites

Standards Education websites –Number of web hits for StandardsEducation.org; StandardsMagazine.ieee-elearning.org; StandardsPapers.ieee- elearning.org; TryStandards.org/ Standards Education eZine –Number of web page visits, number of articles, variety of technical topics, number of issues published SE Workshops and Speaking Events –Number of attendees, results of attendee surveys, feedback from educators and presenters, requests for future workshops and speakers

12-CRS-0106 12/12 Key Challenges & Opportunities 9/9/20159 By-directional education –Bridging the worlds of standards, policy and engineering education, to ensure each recognizes the importance of the other, and providing tools to support educators talking about standards and standards and policy professionals informing the needs of education Building critical mass –SEC supports a number of initiatives which individually have strong support and positive feedback. How can these initiatives be leveraged to provide worldwide support for everyone who wishes to access our support?
