 Expectation: knowing what you can or cannot achieve.  Teachers will get what they expect!

 Ways to show/model positive expectations ◦ Celebrate the first day of school. ◦ Have a welcoming environment ◦ Dress Professionally ◦ Be inviting ◦ Address each student by name ◦ Say “Please” ◦ Acknowledge what they do ◦ Smile!!!!!

 Characteristics of an Effective Teacher?  Four Stages of Teaching?  Why are positive Expectations important?  Objective #1: define characteristics of an effective teacher

Step 1: Fold a white paper into 4 quarters. Step 2: Label Each Quarter: Quarter 1: Family Quarter 2: Professional Quarter 3: Goals Quarter 4: (provide your own)

 Step 3: In each box, place information about each topic using words or pictures that best describes you. (10 minutes)  Step 4: Share with a partner (2 minutes)  Step 5: Partner Presentations  Discussion Questions: ◦ How does this help your students? ◦ How does this help you as their teachers? ◦ What information does this provide and how else can it be used in the classroom

 Discussion Questions:  Why is this important?  How does this help your students?  How does this help you as their teachers?  Objective #2: Review and understand course syllabus, requirements and procedures.

The practices and procedures that a teacher uses to maintain an environment in which instruction and learning can occur.

 The most important factor governing student learning is CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT ◦ Agree or Disagree?  What is Classroom Management?

CharacteristicsEffective TeacherIneffective Teacher 1. High level of student involvement with work Students are workingTeacher is working 2. Clear student expectations Students know that assignments and tests are based on objectives. Teacher says, “Read Ch. 3 and know the material because you’ll be tested on everything in the chapter.”

CharacteristicsEffective TeacherIneffective Teacher 3. Relatively little wasted time, confusion, or disruption Teacher has procedures and routines, starts class immediately, has assignments posted. Teacher makes up rules and punishes according to his or her mood, takes roll and wastes time, students ask for assignments repeatedly. 4. Work-oriented but relaxed and pleasant climate Teacher has invested time in practicing procedures until they become routines, knows how to bring a class to attention, knows how to praise the deed and encourage the student. Teacher tells but does not rehearse procedures, teacher yells and flicks light switch, teacher uses generalized praise or none at all.

 It’s how you get paid!  All schools have attendance procedures. Use required procedures.  Most attendance is now computerized.  Use your seating chart to take roll. Yelled out responses interrupt students completing assignments.  It’s how you get paid!
