6  Develop a Lesson Plan for the first day of school.

7  How important is the first day of school  Important Procedures for the first day: ◦ How and where do you greet students? ◦ Where should classroom information be posted?  Name, Room Number, Subject(s) ◦ How students enter room ◦ Seating Chart ◦ First Assignment ◦ What do you say to start class

9  Why is the first day of school important?  Why is attendance taking important?  Objective #1: Develop a lesson plan for the 1 st day of school.

11  It’s how you get paid!  All schools have attendance procedures. Use required procedures.  Most attendance is now computerized.  Use your seating chart to take roll. Yelled out responses interrupt students completing assignments.  It’s how you get paid!

14  A well-managed classroom will minimize your discipline problems  If you do not have a plan, then you are planning to fail!

15  Two kinds of teachers: ◦ Reactive: teacher who doesn’t know what to do. 80% of classroom problems are caused by ineffective teachers. ◦ Proactive: has a plan and procedures in place that is organized for academic success

17  Use rules to state your specific behavior expectations, not what you want performed.  Limit rules to a maximum of 5.  Examples: ◦ Sit in your assigned seat daily. ◦ No food or drinks allowed in class.

18  Problem Solving Plan 1.What’s the problem? 2.What’s causing the problem? (Please list the factors) 3.What plan will you use to solve the problem? 4.Signature & Date line

19  The number one problem in the classroom is not discipline; it is the lack of procedures & routines.  Why students do not follow procedures: 1.Teacher has not thought out what happens in the classroom. 2.Students have not been taught how to follow procedures. 3.Teacher spends no time managing the classroom with procedures.

20  Discipline concerns how students behave.  Procedures concern how things are done.  Discipline has penalties and rewards.  Procedures have no penalties or rewards.

21  Procedure: What the teacher wants done.  Routine: What the students do automatically.

22  Three Step Approach: 1. Explain. State, explain, model and demonstrate the procedure. 2. Rehearse. Rehearse and practice the procedure under your supervision. 3. Reinforce. Reteach, rehearse, practice, and reinforce the classroom procedure until it becomes a student habit or routine.

23  What 2 groups determine the continuum of discipline plans?  Why are classroom procedures important?  Objective #3: Understand the continuum of discipline plans.  Objective #4: Develop Classroom Procedures & Routines.

24  Develop procedures for the following: ◦ How do you dismiss students? ◦ How do you quiet class and gain students attention? ◦ How do students ask you for help? Include: Explain, Rehearse, Reinforce

25  How to Structure Group Activities ◦ Specify the group NAME. ◦ Specify the group SIZE. ◦ State the PURPOSE, MATERIALS, and STEPS of the activity. ◦ Teach the PROCEDURES. ◦ Insist on INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNTABILITY for the work of the group. ◦ Teach the EVALUATION METHODS the students can use to determine how successfully they have worked together.

27  For the effective teacher, recording what and how well students are doing is essential in assessing and helping each student reach maximum learning capacity.  Designed properly, a gradebook should let you see each students results and progress immediately.
