WELCOME! Mrs. May FFHS – English I

HEART Philosophy  H – Honesty  E – Empathy  A – Action  R – Respect  T - Trust

HONESTY  Zero tolerance for cheating and dishonesty You will lose exam exemption status in ALL classes the first time you cheat. See handbook for additional consequences. Dishonesty/cheating will earn you zero credit on the assignment. You will be allowed to complete another assignment for half-credit after school or during Empower Time! NO NHS! Referral

Empathy  I will spend a great deal of time getting to know everyone in the class.  Much of our learning will be collaborative.  Everyone is expected to relate to others.

Action  Active learner  Active within school  Active within the community

RESPECT  I will always respect you and appreciate you as an individual. I expect respect in return and respect for your peers.

TRUST  We must trust each other in order to learn in this class.  You must learn to believe in and trust yourself, your peers and teacher.  Without trust, people will fear contributing and sharing and we all lose.

HEART REWARDS  Exceptional work ethic and behavior will be rewarded with a heart certificate. This certificate will allow you to earn five additional points on any assignment, quiz or test. You will need to submit certificate with the indicating the assignment for which you would like to receive additional credit.

TARDINESS  See student handbook/planners.  3 tardies = 1 absence for exam exemption  Sign-in, parent(s) called AFTER 2 ND TARDY – referrals FOR EACH after  Life Skill!

ABSENCES  See student handbook  Consequences for 5 absences in semester class and 10 for yearlong – all work must be made up!  Excused – work made up within 3 days; Unexcused = 2 days  Quizzes/tests made up after school – scheduled with teacher  Travel Form  Check Haiku/Canvas  Exam Exemption

OFFICE/COUNSELING REFERRALS  See student handbook/planners/syllabus.  Immediate referrals for: Inappropriate language/behavior. Disrespect of teachers, adults and peers. Insubordination.  Excessive tardies/absences.  Habitual missing/late work.

Grading Practices & Missing/Late Work Policy  All work will be completed.  Early work – REWARDED  LATE work – PENALIZED – (AT LEAST10 points a day!) *** Note: All tests are expected to be made within 3 days of any excused absence and must be completed after school unless otherwise arranged with me.

Grading Practices  Missing/Late/Absent Work folders  Parents will be notified of incomplete work via progress reports & Parent Portal. You will be expected to have a parent sign your report. All reports are due the following day unless approved by teacher.  Progress reports are scored – MUST RETURN!

Grading Practices  Do your assignment correctly the first time. If you write a great paper and/or do a project well the first time, you will receive full credit (and have time to do other things!)  If you leave school early for a school sponsored event you must make up all work within 3 days.
