Present tense: an action that happens regularly, a general truth Present & Past Tense Present tense: an action that happens regularly, a general truth The mail arrives at 1:00 P.M. Past tense: an action that already happened Yesterday the mail arrived late.

Progressive Tense Helping verb + -ing Present progressive: an action/condition that is continuing in the present He is going. (singular) We are going. (plural) Past progressive: an action/condition that continued for some time in the past She was exploring. (singular) We were listening. (plural)

Perfect Tense Have/had + verb Present perfect: action that happened at an indefinite time in the past, a past action that happened in the past and may still be happening The dogs have barked for hours. The dogs have been barking all day. Past perfect: action that happened before another action or event in the past He had just sat down when the music began.

Future Tense Future: something that will happen in the future, formed by adding the helping verb “will” before the main verb Joe will play the piano. Time words: used with present/present progressive to show that an action will happen in the future EX: soon, next month, tomorrow Tomorrow we leave for vacation. Later we are eating dinner. Future perfect: an action that will happen before another future event begins, formed by adding “will have” before the verb’s past participle. As of Friday, I will have worked nonstop for a week.

Conclusion (4-6 sentences) (Opposite of introduction) Re-state your thesis (claim) “The Giving Tree is a strong/weak character because…” Re-state the evidence (grounds) used We examined several moments from the story… Re-state what this evidence has shown (warrant) These moments show us that… Connect your claim to a larger, more general idea

Re-state thesis (claim) The sound of the dead man’s heartbeat in the last scene of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” is meant to symbolize the narrator’s conscience.

Re-state evidence (grounds) We examined the moment in the last scene where the sound of the heartbeat lead the narrator to confess to the crime.

Re-state what the evidence has shown (warrant) Since the sound of the heartbeat affected the narrator as a conscience would, pressuring him until he finally did the moral thing and confessed, the heartbeat must symbolize his conscience.

Connect your claim to a larger, more general idea If we all listen to our consciences, like the narrator finally did at the end of the story, we can be sure to do the right thing, even under the worst circumstances.

Example Paragraph The sound of the dead man’s heartbeat in the last scene of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” is meant to symbolize the narrator’s conscience. We examined the moment in the last scene where the sound of the heartbeat lead the narrator to confess to the crime. Since the sound of the heartbeat affected the narrator as a conscience would, pressuring him until he finally did the moral thing and confessed, the heartbeat must symbolize his conscience. If we all listen to our consciences, like the narrator finally did at the end of the story, we can be sure to do the right thing, even under the worst circumstances.
