2 What is a Narrative Essay?  A narrative essay tells a story  Structure of a Story: - Setting - Theme - Mood - Characters - Plot

3 Story Structure- Definitions Setting - location where the action takes place Theme- basic idea of a story Mood- atmosphere that the writer creates for the story Characters- people in the story that are affected by the other elements of the story. Plot- the sequence of events that happen in the story

4 Effective Narrative Essays  Thesis  Transition sentences  Conclusion

5 The Introduction  What does the writer need to do here? - describe your setting -Introduce your characters -Prepare audience for action to come -Hook -who -what -where -when -why -Thesis- introduces the action that is to come***** (Activity 1)

6 The Body  What should be in the body of a narrative essay? - Most of the Plot - needs to be in chronological order - use transitional words to help essay flow - they should be at the end of each paragraph Transitional Words serve 2 purposes: 1. to signal the action at the end of one paragraph 2. to provide a link to the action in the next paragraph

7 The Conclusion  What should be in the conclusion of a narrative essay? - ideas that finish describing the ending of the story The final sentence should do 1 of 3 things: 1. tell the moral of the story 2. make a prediction 3. reveal a revelation
