Helen’s dad was a editor of the local paper and Helen's mom was a house wife. Helen has a half brother named James Simpson from her father’s prior marriage. On February 1882 silence fell on the house when 19-month-old Helen became extremely ill and lost her ability to hear and see. Helen’s parents calculated a doctor for Helen can speak again. Helen attended the Wright- Hamsun school for deaf people she was the only one in the school. She passed middle school, high school, and collage.
